We are proud to introduce Dr. Joy Burrough-Boenisch as our Dutch Distinguished Speaker. Dr. Burrough-Boenisch will present the following two sessions:
In Dutch with Dutch: Battling Language Interference
Thursday, October 25, 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. – Studio 1
Description: Experienced and novice translators alike need to be aware of the manifestations of language interference to avoid contaminating texts. This session will focus on Dutch language interference in English in the Netherlands. Despite being a non-Anglophone country, English is spoken well and used widely, so native English-speaking translators risk encountering language interference from Dutch and local institutionalized “English.” Drawing on examples and research, the speaker will explain how and why English can become “Dunglish.” Attendees will be invited to translate “Dunglish” into English and share their experiences with language interference.

Strategies for Avoiding Language Interference and Coping with Opinionated Clients
Friday, October 26, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. – Studio 1
Description: After reviewing strategies for avoiding language interference in English in the Netherlands (particularly but not exclusively from Dutch), the speaker will discuss another challenge translators face: assertive clients. All translators are all too familiar with the issue of having to deal with opinionated clients who ask language professional to justify linguistic choices or request changes that could compromise the accuracy of the translation. Using examples to elicit input from attendees, the speaker will discuss approaches for dealing with such clients.
