Assistant Administrator: Thelma Gómez Ferry
B.B.A. with more than 18 years of experience as a language consultant. In partnership with her husband, U.S. Army retiree Dale Ferry, Thelma manages a linguistics consultant firm providing services to multinational corporations as well as to State and District Courts. Her specialization is conference interpreting in the legal and medical fields. She is a Texas-licensed staff court interpreter, working for the Council of Judges Administration Courthouse in El Paso, Texas.
Thelma began her career as a Spanish translator-interpreter working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in her native country of Panama. She has served as an expert witness in criminal and civil cases and as a court interpreter-translator under contract for the United States District Court in the Southern District of Texas. She is a strong advocate of team interpreting in the courtroom.
As an educator in the English as a Second Language field, Thelma has shared her field-tested teaching techniques through workshops and articles.
She frequently presents seminars to professional and academic groups, including sessions at NAJIT conferences, and she recently presented at the International Translation-Interpretation 2008 Conference Expo (ITICEX) and the ATA 49th Annual Conference.
Thelma is a member of the Translators and Interpreters Guild, the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters (NAJIT), and the Asociación Panameña de Traductores e Intérpretes (APTI). She is a founding member of the Texas Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (TAJIT) where she serves as a membership committee board member. Thelma is also the Director of Bylaws for the El Paso Interpreters and Translators Association (EPITA).
She is an active member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and is a member of the Medical, Spanish, and Language Technology Divisions.
