Mr. Carl Sullivan, Administrator
Carl Sullivan's career has been amazingly varied. His fascination for Japanese began as a young Mormon missionary; he then served for a number of years as an Air Force Korean linguist before commissioning in the Naval Reserves, where he continues to serve as a Reserve Cryptology Officer, Lieutenant Commander. Receiving his B.A. in Japanese/Asian Studies from the University of Arizona, and M.A. in Second Language Acquisition/Japanese from Brigham Young University, Carl now teaches Japanese, Korean, ESL, and Second Language Teaching Methodology at Snow College, where he has served as department chair and as president of his regional Japanese teaching affiliate. Carl's experience in translation began with his military experience, was intensified during his many years of Japanese residence/business experience working with Japanese manufacturers, and was furthered with the initiation of his business, MasaCa Translations, in partnership with his wife Masae,
several years ago. Carl's background in research, manufacturing, military, photography, sociopolitics, and business provide him with a fairly rich field of knowledge from which to draw. Carl loves the wilderness: he has climbed dozens of difficult peaks and has hiked or run many miles of pristine wilderness in his lifetime. His love of helping others, in conjunction with his love of the outdoors, led Carl to certify as an EMT and as an outdoor wilderness medicine instructor. Carl also loves working with the Boy Scouts, having served for over twenty years as scoutmaster. Carl is now often found after hours helping his wife build log furniture for their planned home, as well as having fun with his many children.
Mr. Richard Mott, Assistant Administrator
I am honored to accept the position of Assistant Administrator of the Japanese Language Division of the American Translators Association. I am looking forward to serving with Mr. Carl Sullivan and Mrs. Mina Seat for the next two years.
I started freelance translating from Japanese to English in 1996 while living in Japan, and today I specialize in technical subject matter chiefly in chemistry, engineering, and pharmaceuticals. Prior to becoming a translator, I worked for almost two decades in a variety of technical and business positions in several multinational corporations, including six years as a research engineer at an R&D technical center in Kobe, Japan. I joined ATA after moving back to the US a number of years ago. Currently I live in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I look forward to meeting more of the JLD membership and to working with ATA
to improve the image and understanding with the public at large of the important
role skilled translators and interpreters play in our increasingly global society.
Ms. Mina Seat, Secretary/Treasurer
Thank you for electing me to be the Secretary-Treasurer of the Japanese Language
Division of ATA. I am excited to be able to serve in this position for the coming
two years with Mr. Carl Sullivan and Mr. Richard Mott.
I was born in Japan and lived there until 2001, when I moved to the United
States after I married my American husband. In Japan, I taught at different
schools for almost ten years, including a four-year college as an English lecturer.
I started working as a translator/interpreter for patent infringement litigation
in the spring of 2001. I have been an ATA member since 2002 and have been expanding
my personal and business experience. I have attended seminars and conferences
and have always enjoyed meeting colleagues and learning more about translation
work. I am looking forward to being a part of future conferences and know they
will be fulfilling.
