The Patent Translation Handbook, edited by Yoriko Morita, deals with the translation of patent-related documents between the Japanese and English language. The book, a product of the ATA's Japanese Language Division, may be purchased from ATA ($25 for ATA members and $40 for non-members).

The Patent Translation Handbook (to our knowledge, the only one of its kind) fills an urgent and long-standing need in the Japanese and American translation communities. It is a fairly comprehensive work, with ten chapters. The handbook is intended for readers who can read both Japanese and English, with nine chapters written primarily in English and one in Japanese. The opening chapters cover topics of general interest to translators working between Japanese and English. Later chapters address specific problems such as translating for information, translating Japanese applications for filing in the United States, litigation-related work, and translating chemical, medical, and biotechnology patents. There is an excellent chapter on sources of information, and a comprehensive glossary of patent terms.
