What is PDF and What do I need to Read the JLD Times?

PDF is a proprietary file format developed by Adobe. PDF stands for Portable Document Format. A PDF file is created using a Distiller. The Adobe Distiller is a licensed product. A PDF file can be read using a free product called the Acrobat Reader.

How do I Download?

Right click (Windows) or click-and-hold (Mac) on the link and use the "Save As" option to save the file to your hard drive.

How do I View?

Double click on the link to automatically open Acrobat Reader in your browser, assuming your browser is configured with the Reader as a plug-in.

How long will a download take?

Using plain-old-telephone service (POTS), expect it to take at least 4 minutes with a 28,800 modem.

I have the Reader, but can't read the file!

There are three reasons that you would not be able to read the file:

  1. You can not interpret the Japanese text in the PDF file.
  2. Your version of the Reader is too old.
  3. Your operating system is not supported.

If you are running an non-Japanese operating system, even if you have a bridge program, such as TwinBridge or the MS Global IME installed and running, you may not be able to interpret Japanese text in Acrobat Reader unless you have the Font Pack installed. The Font Pack is an add-in to the Acrobat Reader that makes foreign fonts available to the English Reader. You may have to upgrade your version of the Reader to install the latest Font Pack. Fonts are not embedded in the JLD Times PDF files.

Regarding your version of the Reader, each version of the Distiller adds functionality to the creation of PDF files so it is possible that a PDF created with a new Distiller is unreadable by an old Reader. The JLD Times is created using Distiller version 3.0. To read this file, you need at least Reader version 3.0. If you do not have this level, please upgrade using the link below.

If you are running into problems viewing the PDF file directly from the web, (i.e. you get error messages within the browser window when you try to view the PDF file) your plug-in may be installed incorrectly. Try downloading the file and viewing the PDF file with the Reader outside of a browser.

And finally, the operating system. The .pdf file has been tested on Windows 95, 98, and Mac OS 8.6. Mac OS will not be able to view the .pdf file directly from the web server. Instead, Mac users will be required to save a copy on their local hard drive.
