RE:            Record of Literary Division Business Meeting, October 30, 2009, 4-5, Gilbert Room, Marquis Marriott, Manhattan

Over 30 translators attended the Literary Division business meeting, October 30, 2009. The meeting was held in the Gilbert Room, 4th floor of the Marriott Marquis.

Enrica Ardemagni presided, thereby completing the final year of her second two-year term as specified by the by-laws.

Ardemagni reported that the division had grown to 1800 members and was sponsoring eight sessions at the 50th anniversary conference.  She announced that Michele Aynesworth would be distributing Source shortly.  Ayneswworth, who was unable to attend, was commended for Beacons X. Aynesworth’s term for Source comes to an end this year.

Emilia Balke was installed as the new Literary Division Administrator. (Dr. Rachid Hasan, the new assistant administrator, was unable to attend.)  Balke, who holds a Master’s degree in English Philology with specialization in translation and interpreting, translates from Bulgarian, Russian, German and Macedonian, and is a Registered Court Interpreter and a contract translator and interpreter with the U.S. State Department based in Los Angeles.  She has been a member of the ATA since 1996.  She asked those present for their concerns and suggestions for forthcoming meetings.  She herself is anxious that less-often taught languages be represented.  Connections with the ALTA were discussed, and bilingual readings at the ATA conference appeared to have wide support from those in attendance at the business meeting.

The pro tempore secretary wishes to make the Division’s appreciation of Ardemagni’s service a matter of record.

Respectfully submitted,

Marilyn Gaddis Rose
