About SlavFile

SlavFile, the newsletter of the Slavic Language Division, is published quarterly. Aside from keeping readers informed of Division and relevant ATA activities, the mission of the newsletter is to provide information that will help facilitate the careers and professional development of translators and interpreters of Slavic languages and to entertain and inform them in areas related to these careers.

We also seek to do everything possible to enable interactions among our geographically dispersed members. In aid of these missions we publish reviews (of dictionaries, conference presentations, software, technical tools, training courses, books), help wanted ads and other relevant announcements, glossaries on specific topics compiled by our members, translator profiles, columns, correspondence, poetry translations, opinion pieces, articles about the lives of Slavic language professionals abroad, articles, humorous and otherwise, about linguistic and cultural developments and the experiences of readers. Many features are designed to elicit reader feedback, which is then published. Unsolicited contributions are warmly encouraged.

Virtually all material is published in English, but occasionally we include at most one Russian language contribution in an issue. In this case, starting in 2009, we will provide an English synopsis of the material. Because only a minority of our readers is fluent in a Slavic language other than Russian, while we publish material originally written in these language and post the original language version on our website, we ask such submission be accompanied by complete English translations. Starting in 2009 all terms cited in the original language within an otherwise English article will be accompanied by an English translation.

Roman Worobec is our editor for Ukrainian. We are actively seeking editors for other Slavic languages willing to write or recruit the writing of at least two articles on their specialty per year. No editorial experience is required. Contact Lydia Stone to volunteer. Other members of our editorial board are: Liv Bliss, Roy Cochrun, Jennifer Guernsey, Vladimir Kovner, Christina Sever and Lynn Visson.
