About SlavFile

SlavFile, the newsletter of the Slavic Language Division, is published quarterly. Aside from keeping readers informed of Division and relevant ATA activities, the mission of the newsletter is to provide information that will help facilitate the careers and professional development of translators and interpreters of Slavic languages and to entertain and inform them in areas related to these careers.

We also seek to do everything possible to enable interactions among our geographically dispersed members. In aid of these missions we publish reviews (of dictionaries, conference presentations, software, technical tools, training courses, books), help wanted ads and other relevant announcements, glossaries on specific topics compiled by our members, translator profiles, columns, correspondence, poetry translations, opinion pieces, articles about the lives of Slavic language professionals abroad, articles, humorous and otherwise, about linguistic and cultural developments and the experiences of readers. Many features are designed to elicit reader feedback, which is then published. Unsolicited contributions are warmly encouraged.

The majority of material is published in English, but we not infrequently have at least one Russian language contribution in each issue. We publish material in other Slavic languages, but, because only a minority of our readers is fluent in a Slavic language other than Russian, we ask that they be accompanied by English translations.

While material pertaining to Russian translation has predominated in past SlavFile issues, the editors and SLD leadership are engaged in an active campaign to increase coverage of all the languages with which our members work. To this end we recruit editors to represent the "other" Slavic language. Currently, Stephen M. Dickey and Janja Pavetic-Dickey are serving as contributing editors for Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. Our 2007 editors for Polish and Ukrainian were Genowefa Legowski and Olga Collins. We are looking for 2008 editors for those languages, as well as editors for any other Slavic languages. Lydia Razran Stone (lydiastone@verizon.net) is the editor of SlavFile and Nora Favorov (norafavorov@bellsouth.net) is associate editor. Galina Raff (galina_raff@att.net) is editor for contributions in the Russian language and on technical topics and is responsible for layout, typesetting and advertising.
