Pequeños pero matones: la traducción de los determinantes

Cuando el traductor se enfrenta por primera vez a un texto, su atención se centra en las palabras con gran carga semántica, es decir, los sustantivos, verbos y adjetivos, pasando por alto las palabras pequeñas (determinantes, preposiciones, conjunciones). Sin embargo, son precisamente estas palabras las que confieren a la traducción su carácter idiomático, o en muchos casos anti-idiomático. En el caso del inglés y el español, la similitud aparente de los sistemas de determinación nominal favorece las interferencias en la traducción. Analizaremos los sistemas de determinación nominal (artículos, demostrativos, posesivos, cuantificadores e interrogativos) en ambos idiomas y los problemas que pueden plantear al traductor. |

From Asylum Interviews to Courtroom Interpreting: Interpreting Opportunities with a Prominent Language Service Provider

The presenters will discuss opportunities available to ATA Spanish language interpreters to work with Lionbridge. For 23 years, Lionbridge Federal has provided interpreting services to the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. Lionbridge interpreters work as telephonic interpreters during asylum interviews and immigration hearings, and interpret face-to-face during immigration court proceedings. Lionbridge provides testing and training in terminology, and in simultaneous and consecutive modes of interpreting. |

Comparative Law: Discussion of Definitions for Translation Building

ATA Exam Prep*

This workshop offers an opportunity to gain valuable insight into the English>Spanish certification exam and the grading process. The first 30 people to complete and submit a practice test translation before the conference will be able to participate. The presenters—both of them English>Spanish graders—will use participants’ translations to lead a discussion on how graders reason through their grading decisions. In order to receive the passage for translation, you must register for the SPD Conference. Participants will have until March 16 to translate the 300-word passage. Only the first 30 people who turn in their translations will be allowed to be participants in the workshop.

Se lee que traducir es un arte. Aunque abducidos por la faena solemos olvidarnos de ello, ese arte no puede consistir en una mera lista de palabras en nuestro idioma que permiten entender al autor, sino que implica escribirlas, y escribir también es un arte. El objetivo general de la presentación es tratar algunos elementos del idioma español con los cuales cuentan los traductores para resolver problemas generales de redacción. Se presentarán estrategias con las cuales resolver problemas que el traductor encuentra a diario. Se comentarán problemas diversos: reiteraciones, coletillas, usos poco naturales en el español general, oraciones complejas, uso de artículos, enlace y desconexión de oraciones, y verbos con doble preposición. También se de los enfoques ante problemas de calidad del original. |

Spanish and English are world languages used to communicate world-wide events. As translators this should lead us to reflect on the fact that translation is normally considered to be a process of transforming a text in one language into a text in another single language. In reality, we are increasingly faced with texts containing words from more than one language. While this problem is fairly well-known in fields such as the legal field (Latin, French), or the Arts (French, Italian) I have found instances in many other fields, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing and historic architecture. The Pancreas: Function and Dysfunction

Homeostasis, the dynamic balance of neurological and chemical processes in the human body, is maintained by constant feedback and regulation involving the brain, nervous tissues, and a great number of glands and organs. One important and essential organ that helps maintain homeostasis that many translators and interpreters do not know much about is the pancreas. Pathological conditions of the pancreas can be chronic or acutely life threatening. The goals of this workshop include: identify the pancreatic anatomical structures with which medical translators and interpreters must be familiar; discuss function and dysfunction of the pancreas including pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, and diabetes; become familiar with the most common diagnostic and laboratory tests; and provide a useful Spanish<>English glossary of terms. |

Upholding Translation Standards in Regulated Industries: The Competent Medical Translator

This presentation will address the evolution of translation standards in the medical field and the problems arising from the lack of adherence to said standards. Standards developed by different organizations will be examined and compared. The role of translation agencies in the maintenance and refinement of medical translation standards, proven quality assurance procedures for regulated translation, and the different roles of the people involved in medical translation will be examined. The ideal profile of the medical translator will also be evaluated from several angles. Lastly, the speaker will address different methods for acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to work as a medical translator. |

Alicia Agnese is a Spanish translator with more than 30 years of experience in legal, business, financial, and technical translation, in Argentina and the U.S. She is currently president and senior translator of her own language service company, Alicia Agnese & Associates, Inc. An ATA-certified English>Spanish translator, Alicia holds an undergraduate degree in teaching English as a second language, and a graduate degree in applied linguistics. She is a frequent presenter at ATA events.
Julia Lambertini Andreotti has been working as an interpreter and translator in California for over 16 years. She is certified as a court interpreter by the State of California and the Administrative Office of the US Courts, and is an ATA-certified English>Spanish translator. Julia holds a BA from the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, a certificate in Legal Interpretation and Translation from California State University, Los Angeles, and an MA in Linguistics from California State University, Northridge. Julia is currently pursuing a PhD in Translation and Intercultural Studies from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain.
María Barros was born and educated in Spain. She has degrees in classical languages and English philology and a PhD in translation. She currently holds a permanent position as senior reviser and terminologist of the Spanish Translation Service at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
Michael A. Blumenthal graduated from the University of Michigan with a major in Zoology and a minor in English. He also has a master’s degree in Biological Control of Insects, from Cornell University. In 1983, he co-founded M&M Translations, Inc. and currently serves as its director. He is also a full-time Spanish>English translator for the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services: Disability Determination Services where he translates medical records.
Mercedes Guhl estudió filosofía y letras en la Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá). Luego de trabajar como editora y traductora de libros para niños, cursó la maestría en traducción de la Universidad de Warwick (Gran Bretaña). Desde entonces ha combinado el ejercicio profesional de la traducción con la docencia de esta disciplina. Ha dictado talleres y conferencias en Colombia, México y Estados Unidos. Entre sus traducciones figuran Alicia en el país de las maravillas y El fantasma de Canterville, además de textos sobre temas ambientales y ciencias sociales.
Rudy Heller lleva alrededor de 10 años dentro del grupo E>S de correctores de los exámenes de certificación de la ATA. Fue invitado al grupo al cabo de más de 20 años de ejercer la profesión de traductor e intérprete en Estados Unidos. Además de la certificación de la ATA, Rudy cuenta con la certificación para trabajar de intérprete en los juzgados federales y en los juzgados del estado de Massachussets, donde reside. En el taller colaborará con Rudy otro de los correctores del mismo grupo.
Anne Catesby Jones specializes in legal and manufacturing translation, and has given talks based on her work at ATA-sponsored events, including: the 2004 Pharmaceutical Translation Seminar held in San Juan; the 2004 ATA Annual Conference in Toronto, the joint conference of the 2005 Spanish and Portuguese Language Divisions in Las Vegas, Nevada; and most recently in a joint presentation at the 2007 ATA Conference in San Francisco. She has also published articles in The ATA Chronicle.
Javier Labrador has been working as an English>Spanish translator and interpreter since 1979. Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, he moved to the U.S. in 1994, where he soon began his professional career as an editor, senior editor, and language manager for various translation and multimedia advertising companies. He is currently the executive quality manager at TransPerfect Translations and assistant professor in Hunter College’s Continuing Education Translation and Interpretation Program, where he teaches Spanish and editing. He holds a degree in English Language and Literature, majoring in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Havana.
Liliana Bernardita Mariotto, a certified English<>Spanish translator, graduated from Buenos Aires University in 1981. She is licensed by Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Liliana has presented at several conferences, including: ATA Annual Conferences; I Congreso Internacional de Traducción Especializada; la Asociación de Traductores e Intérpretes de Monterrey, Asociación Civil’s II International Symposia & Convention; and the V Congreso Latinoamericano de Traducción e Interpretación.
Marko Miletich has a master's degree in hispanic civilization from New York University and a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Hunter College. He has worked extensively as a translator and interpreter. He is the coordinator for the Translation and Interpretation Program, as well as a faculty member, at Hunter College School of Continuing Education.
Olga Lucía Mutis de Serna. Después de estudiar bacteriología, inglés e italiano, me dediqué a la traducción hace 18 años, durante los cuales he hecho todo tipo de traducciones farmacéuticas, de seguros, salud, nutrición, etc. En la actualidad curso una maestría en estudios biológicos y naturistas, con énfasis en nutrición y homeopatía.
Izaskun Milani Orkwis es licenciada en filología románica e intérprete jurada de inglés, francés e italiano a español. Se dedica a la traducción desde 1995, con especial énfasis en la traducción jurídica y financiera. Desde el 2003 es traductora y revisora en una institución financiera multilateral con sede en Washington, D.C.
Marianne Teleki was raised bilingual in Brazil, Mexico and the United States. She worked as a Spanish language interpreter for 19 years after obtaining her BA in language studies at the University of California Santa Cruz and attending the Translation and Interpretation program at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Marianne has worked as an interpreter for legal depositions, workers’ compensation and unemployment hearings, criminal court hearings, and telephonic interpretation. For thirteen years she worked at the immigration court in San Francisco as a staff interpreter and supervisory interpreter. Since 2004, Marianne has worked with Lionbridge as a quality assurance manager.
Rocío Txabarriaga, MA, currently works as an independent localization consultant and technical/medical translator. She is an ATA-certified English>Spanish translator and a NASBITE Certified Global Business Professional. Fluent in five languages and with over 18 years of experience in all aspects of the translation and localization fields, Rocio is an ongoing contributor to industry standards for the fields of translation and localization, and has earned recognition as a speaker on these topics throughout the U.S. and internationally.
Jorge U. Ungo is an experienced interpreter trainer and has presented at several events, including the International Medical Interpreters Association Conference, and the ATA Energy Seminar. As the director of professional development for the Houston Interpreters and Translators Association, he coordinates training opportunities for both interpreters and translators.
Ana Maria Varela Gill is a native Spanish speaker with a BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley. Ana Maria has worked with Lionbridge for several years as a Spanish interpreter and mentor for immigration courts in San Francisco, Seattle, Tacoma, Portland (Oregon), Los Angeles, San Pedro (California), Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Hawaii, Missouri, and Louisiana. She has also interpreted for conferences, hospitals, mental health departments, urban development, and city planning divisions. Currently, Ana Maria is working with Lionbridge as a staff Spanish interpreter and interpreter liaison for the Arlington (Virginia) and Baltimore immigration courts, and the state of Maryland contract conducting evaluations and providing interpreter training.
Mati Vargas-Gibson moved from Mexico to the U.S. in 1978, has been translating English<>Spanish since 1985, and currently specializes in healthcare and wellness translations. She is also involved in the field of alternative healing as a practitioner of meditation and energy work, and is currently obtaining teacher certification in Gabrielle Roth's 5Rhythms™ Movement Meditation Practice. Mati is always exploring the body-mind connection and how stress and attitudes affect our professional work and our personal lives.
Álvaro M. Villegas, español, es licenciado en Farmacia por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y ha trabajado como farmacéutico de oficina de farmacia y en diversos puestos del campo de la investigación clínica. Desde hace 11 años se desempeña como traductor médico. Ha residido en España, México y los Estados Unidos. Es miembro de la ATA y desde el 2002 cuenta con la certificación de la ATA para el par English>Spanish. Asimismo es miembro activo de diversas listas de correo relacionadas con la traducción y los aspectos éticos de la investigación con seres humanos.
Salvador Virgen es ingeniero químico. Su primer trabajo fue como programador de computadoras y participó en equipos que crearon diversos procesadores de palabras y programas de bases de datos. También es maestro en literatura del siglo XX y es un traductor certificado por la ATA (inglés>español). Desde 1995 es traductor independiente y ha traducido varios libros. Ha impartido cursos universitarios sobre semántica, traducción técnica y lexicología. Es miembro de la ATA y la Organización Mexicana de Traductores.
Georganne Weller tiene una licenciatura en relaciones internacionales, una maestría en sociolingüística, y un doctorado en lingüística aplicada. Ha sido directora académica de las carreras de interpretación y traducción en Chile, los Estados Unidos y México, ha impartido más de 35 cursos sobre temas de sociolingüística, interpretación y traducción, y es autora de unos 30 artículos. Actualmente se desempeña como Directora de Políticas Lingüísticas en el Instituto Nacional de Lenguas Indígenas en México. Es miembro de ATA, NAJIT, y AIIC y cuenta con la certificación como intérprete de tribunales de los Estados Unidos. Tiene más de 30 años de experiencia como intérprete y traductora y en agosto de 2004 fue distinguida con el Premio Malinztin que otorga el Colegio Mexicano de Conferencias.
Rosalie Wells is a native of Mexico, where she grew up a bilingual home. Her career as a full time professional Spanish translator began 23 years ago. She is an ATA-certified English>Spanish translator. Rosalie has an established track record doing presentations and workshops on technical subjects of interest to translators. She also provides private consultation in computer-aided translation tools and efficiency in the translation process to translation companies and translation departments of large corporations. She is a long-term member of the ATA and has served on a variety of committees. She is webmaster of the Spanish Division website, and serves on the ATA Professional Development Committee and the Standards Committee.
