Drawing on the presenter&#8217;s experience translating three book-length works, the session focuses on how terms such as \u201ctongzhi\u201d \u540c\u5fd7 resist straightforward equivalence in English.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\">\n<div>\n<p>The presentation considers the defining characteristics of \u201cgay\u201d fiction\u2014whether determined by content, authorship, or readership\u2014and how specific translation choices shape the work&#8217;s reception in English-language contexts. Furthermore, it explores the contested and uneasy assimilation of gay fiction into broader \u201cqueer\u201d or \u201cLGBTQ+\u201d frameworks, questioning what may be lost when the cultural specificity of gay literature is subsumed under these globalized categories. The session addresses critical questions of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Register and historical context<\/li>\n<li>Shifting semantic meanings<\/li>\n<li>The translator\u2019s role in mediating between terminological precision and narrative readability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><b>Presenters&#8217; Bio:<\/b><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Scott E. Myers (\u5922\u4e4b\u6069) is a Chinese\u2013English literary translator and educator based in California, where he teaches in the Chinese Translation and Interpretation program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). His published translations include <i>Beijing Comrades<\/i>\u00a0by Bei Tong (Feminist Press, 2016) and\u00a0<i>In the Face of Death We Are Equal<\/i>\u00a0by Mu Cao (Seagull Books, 2020). He recently completed a third book-length translation,\u00a0<i>Paper Marriage<\/i>\u00a0by Taiwanese author Chen Ruoxi, and is currently seeking a publishing home for this translation.
