The text dueled over (uh, translated) by Dominique Jonkers and Fran\u00e7ois Lavall\u00e9e was Nauru, a Sinking Feeling<\/em>, an article from the New York Times, available here<\/a>. The source text was in English and the translation was into French.\u00a0Listeners who are looking for a challenge are invited to produce their own translation before listening to the podcast!<\/em><\/p>\n

DOMINIQUE JONKERS <\/u><\/strong>is a freelance financial translator (English and Dutch > French) and owner of www.jonkersandpartners.com<\/a>, a translation boutique specializing in corporate and financial translations. He is not someone who fits easily into traditional molds. Dutch by birth and by mother tongue, he grew up a French-speaking Belgian surrounded by linguistic diversity. He began his career as a corporate banker, a notably international and multilingual environment. In 1997 as the Internet began to emerge, he made the switch to translation, harnessing an inborn talent to help define a new profession of \u201cfinancial translator.\u201d<\/p>\n

A regular guest speaker on economic and financial translation at workshops and conferences, Dominique firmly believes that the French poet Boileau had translators in mind when he said that clear understanding leads to clear writing. In 2000 he created an online resource for freelance financial translators (https:\/\/finance.groups.yahoo.com\/group\/financialtranslators\/<\/a>) that has done much to lift the level of professionalism in the field.<\/p>\n

Dominique is a regular presenter at the specialized conferences organized alternately by SFT<\/a> and ASTTI<\/a> (Universit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 de la traduction financi\u00e8re<\/em>). In 2011 he won the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise des traducteurs\u2019 Pierre-Fran\u00e7ois Caill\u00e9 Award<\/a> for his Dutch to French translation of author and serial entrepreneur Leen Zevenbergen\u2019s En morgen laat ik mijn baard staan<\/em>, published in French as Br\u00fble ta cravate et danse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A member of both CBTI and SFT, Dominique also served as SFT treasurer and was a member of the SFT executive committee for several years.<\/p>\n

FRAN\u00c7OIS\u00a0LAVALL\u00c9E<\/u><\/strong>,\u00a0C.\u00a0Tr., has been exploring the fascinating world of words and language for over 30 years as a translator, reviser, trainer, author,\u00a0lexicographer<\/a>\u2026and as a reader.<\/p>\n

After freelancing for 20 years, he was recruited in 2009 by\u00a0Edgar<\/a>, a Qu\u00e9bec translation firm. He is now\u00a0Edgar\u2019s vice-president of training and quality.<\/p>\n

The president of\u00a0Magistrad<\/a>, a professional development school for translators that he founded in 2006,\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois\u00a0has also been teaching general, commercial and legal translation as well as revision at Laval University in Qu\u00e9bec, Canada. He has acted as a trainer and speaker at various\u00a0ATA<\/a>\u00a0conferences and at the \u201cTranslate in\u2026\u201d events since their inception (2009).<\/p>\n

His practical translation guide,\u00a0Le traducteur averti<\/em><\/a>, has sold over 2,000\u00a0copies.\u00a0He also penned two collections of short stories (Le tout est de ne pas le dire<\/em><\/a>, 2001;\u00a0Dieu, c\u2019est par o\u00f9?<\/em><\/a>, 2006), a novel (L\u2019homme qui fuyait<\/em><\/a>, 2013) and a collection of fables in the style of La Fontaine (Quand la fontaine coule dans la vall\u00e9e<\/em><\/a>, 2007).\u00a0His books can be found on the bookseller Renaud-Bray\u2019s website (www.renaud-bray.com<\/a>), among other places.<\/p>\n

Since 2009, he has been distilling his \u201creviser\u2019s tips\u201d on Twitter (@Magistrad_Plus<\/a>), several hundred of which were compiled, along with some of Grant Hamilton\u2019s, in an anthology:\u00a0Tweets et gazouillis pour des traductions qui chantent<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Linguatech \u00e9diteur, 2012).<\/p>\n
