As interpreters, we are generally aware that the situations in which we serve may change in an instant. The power may go out, equipment may fail, a boothmate may fall ill. So we prepare. We consider those scenarios in advance and identify how we might address them.<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s world, those unexpected things for which we try to prepare may also include interruptions by law enforcement. It is important that we consider the ethical, practical, and procedural challenges that such interruptions may pose, before we actually face one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To help interpreters find their own best options when faced with those challenges, ATA has joined with several sister associations to publish Guidance for Interpreters During Unexpected Law Enforcement Encounters<\/em>, spearheaded by American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE). It will be widely shared by these associations and other organizations, and we encourage you to download<\/a> and share it as well.<\/p>\n
