We’ve dedicated ourselves to bridging communication gaps, ensuring clarity, and facilitating critical conversations across languages. However, our vital profession is facing unprecedented pressures that demand we step forward and make our voices heard.

On one hand, the rapid emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) interpreting presents a transformative, and sometimes threatening, challenge. While technology can be a tool, the potential for its misapplication to replace human skill, particularly in sensitive, high-stakes settings, is a real concern that we MUST address.

Simultaneously, we’ve seen systemic challenges affect our ability to provide services. There have been recent policy shifts in the United States. Consider, for example, Executive Order (EO) 131666, which was signed in 2000 and required all federal agencies and recipients of federal funding to take reasonable steps to ensure meaningful access. Executive Order 14224, signed in March 2025 revoked EO 131666, and formally designated English as the official language of the U.S. federal government; this represents a reversal of decades of federal language access policy. This executive order and its related guidance[1], coupled with severe budget cuts to language access programs and the elimination of federal guidance, are creating instability and insecurity in our profession. While laws such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 have not changed, these actions chip away at the very foundation of comprehensive language access, ultimately jeopardizing both our livelihoods and the rights of speakers of languages other than English.

As interpreters, we can no longer afford to be passive observers. The time for silent worry is over. It is time for action—for the interpreting community to collectively step into the spotlight and champion the essential role we play.

Three Pillars of Action for Interpreters

The good news is we don’t have to wait for things to happen to us; we can shape the future of interpreting. Here are three concrete ways we can engage:

1. Get Informed

Before you can be an effective voice, you must be a knowledgeable one. Dedicate time to understanding the forces at play:

Policy & Legislation: Know what is happening in the legislative and regulatory spheres, as well as in practice, both locally and nationally. What new policies are being discussed that could affect language access in courts, healthcare, or public services? Who is starting to incorporate AI into their language support model and how? For example, the Wisconsin legislature was considering Assembly Bill 377, which would use AI to replace interpreters in government settings. However, through advocacy and support from local interpreters, the bill ultimately died. This does not mean that the issue will not come up in the future, only that interpreters and other organizations will now have the time to better organize if and when the bill is presented again before the State Assembly. While those who live outside the state of Wisconsin may feel that it does not apply to them, being informed and active in advocacy efforts can help us each prepare for legislative changes that may impact our profession in our own markets.

Technology Capabilities: Investigate the actual capabilities and, more importantly, the limitations of current AI interpreting tools. Understand where human skill—nuance, ethics, cultural competence, and crisis management—remains indispensable. This knowledge is your shield against premature and ill-informed adoption of technology. Do you understand the process for machine (AI) interpreting? Do you know how accurate different tools are? Are you leveraging AI tools to improve your own efficiency or effectiveness? Do you understand its current strengths and weaknesses related to accuracy and completeness? Know how to use the tools and practice before using them in a professional capacity.

2. Build Your Case

No one can explain the essential nature of your work better than you. You must actively articulate and defend the value you bring to the table.

Define Your Difference: Don’t be shy about what you offer that technology or uncertified/unqualified interpreters cannot: your deep understanding of context, your adherence to a code of ethics, your crisis intervention skills, and your ability to build trust. These, and more, are what make your service a necessity, not a commodity.

Share Your Story: Take the initiative to communicate with your legislative representatives, organizational leaders, or local media. Write a concise letter explaining why you joined the profession and illustrating with concrete examples why robust, human-centered language access is crucial for justice, health, and equal opportunity in your community. Let them know the real-world impact of budget cuts. Find your Representative HERE. Find your Senator HERE. At the local level, consider reaching out to your Governor HERE and local legislators HERE.

3. Join the Movement

Individual efforts are powerful, but collective strength is transformative. You don’t have to build an initiative from scratch; you just have to support those who are already working tirelessly on your behalf.

Unite with professional organizations like ATA: Seek out and actively support the associations, like ATA and local ATA Chapters, that are monitoring legislation, developing standards, and fighting for equitable access, fair compensation, and improved working conditions. Whether through membership, donations, or volunteering your time, lend your weight to their mission. For example, the ATA’s Advocacy Committee actively works on behalf of ATA to promote recognition of the translation and interpreting professions. It focuses on policy and legislative issues affecting translation, interpreting, and related fields. You can support their mission by sharing their publications with others, and sharing new or proposed bills with the committee.

Amplify Key Initiatives: When a cause arises that directly affects your sector—be it fair compensation for court interpreters, better hospital staffing for interpreters, or pushing back against flawed AI mandates—get behind it. Share the message, contact your representatives as requested, and lend your professional credibility and anecdotal evidence to the argument.

Our profession is defined by our ability to make communication possible. Now, it’s time to communicate with stakeholders about the risks associated with failing to leverage professional language support. The future of interpreting in the United States is not certain; it is a battle for recognition, resources, and respect. By being informed, building our case, and joining the movement, we can ensure that the voices of both interpreters, and the communities we serve, are heard loud and clear.

What action will you take this week to amplify the importance of our work?

[1] The Guidance from the Department of Justice direct federal agencies to review all services currently offered in languages other than English and to consider operating exclusively in English where legally permitted.

______

The ATA Interpreting Profession Advisory Committee (IPAC) focuses on matters relating to the interpreting profession.

Photo of pedestrian crossing lines at a crossroad by Ryoji Iwata on Unsplash

This article is closed to comments on the blog.
