<\/span>Izumi Suzuki started her workshop by asking the attendees\u2019 preferred language, Japanese or English. Then she asked how many have ever interpreted in deposition. She saw only few hands and decided to give basic level of workshop. Basic does not always mean easy. All of the attendees were on the hot seat trying to provide accurate interpreting of a video-taped sample case, TRZ vs Max Mutual Insurance. Here is the brief summary of what we learned.<\/span><\/div>\n

Deposition (\u8a3c\u8a00\u9332\u53d6<\/span>) is a proceeding outside the courtroom in which a witness gives testimony. There will be (a) lawyer(s) for the deponent (\u8a3c\u4eba\u5074\u5f01\u8b77\u4eba<\/span>) side, (an)other lawyer(s) for the deposing side (\u76f8\u624b\u5074\u5f01\u8b77\u4eba<\/span>), court reporter (\u6cd5\u5ef7\u901f\u8a18\u4eba<\/span>), main interpreter (\u30e1\u30a4\u30f3\u901a\u8a33\u4eba<\/span>), check interpreter (\u30c1\u30a7\u30c3\u30af\u901a\u8a33\u4eba<\/span>), and video specialist (\u30d3\u30c7\u30aa\u9332\u753b\u4eba<\/span>). The deponent and interpreters will have to be sworn in by responding to a question read by the court reporter. Here is the question for the deponent: \u201cDo you solemnly swear that the testimony you are about to make is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? \uff08\u3042\u306a\u305f\u306e\u8a3c\u8a00\u306b\u304a\u3044\u3066\u3001\u771f\u5b9f<\/span><\/em>\u3092\u3001\u3059\u3079\u3066\u306e<\/span>\u771f\u5b9f<\/span><\/em>\u3092\u3001<\/i>\u305d\u3057\u3066<\/span>\u771f\u5b9f<\/span><\/em>\u3060\u3051\u3092\u8ff0\u3079\u308b\u3053\u3068\u3092\u53b3\u7c9b\u306b<\/span>\u8a93\u3044\u307e\u3059\u304b\u3002\uff09<\/span><\/em><\/span>\u201d <\/o:p><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Preparation is critical. Since there are many statements and phrases repeated in difference cases, it is a good idea to obtain a copy of a similar case from the lawyer\u2019s office. Read the materials in advance, and memorize statements phrases used in deposition. Bring your computer with Bridge software so that you can read the court reporters records converted to normal English on your computer. There will be many objections during the examination, so try not to be disturbed. <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
