This session gave us space to look back at everything we did in 2025, share post-conference insights, and talk openly about what our members want\u2014and need\u2014from the Law Division moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed to the conversation, and shared ideas. And a very special thank-you to our ATA legal speakers, who generously took the time to recap their ATA Conference legal sessions for members who couldn\u2019t attend in person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u27a1\ufe0f <\/span><b>We\u2019ll be sharing the slides on our <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/groups.io\"><b>Groups.io<\/b><\/a><b> group!<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>A Look Back at Law Division Events in 2025<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We started by reviewing the Law Division\u2019s activities throughout 2025, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ata-divisions.org\/LawD\/category\/law-division-networking\/2025-lawd-networking\/\"><b>networking events<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ata-divisions.org\/LawD\/category\/lawd-events\/\"><b>co-working sessions<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ata-divisions.org\/LawD\/category\/lawd-webinar\/2025-lawd-webinar\/\"><b>webinars<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Members shared what they found most useful and what they\u2019d love to see more of next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also shared the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ata-divisions.org\/LawD\/category\/annual-meeting\/2025-lawd-annual-meeting\/\"><b>2025 LawD Annual Meeting Minutes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where we discussed every event in detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also asked attendees to share their favorite Law Division event of the year\u2014and the results gave us helpful insight as we plan for 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Post-Conference Highlights from ATA 66 Legal Speakers<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were excited to welcome several ATA 66 speakers who joined us to recap their legal sessions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rebecca Jowers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared highlights from her session <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(058) \u201cPropiedad intelectual e industrial\u201d: Fundamentals of Intellectual Property for Legal T&amp;Is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her session and slides were full of useful terminology, and she always does a great job of including legal Spanish variations from different Spanish-speaking countries\u2014which makes it especially valuable for our work.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mar\u00eda Eugenia Garc\u00eda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave us a short overview of her presentation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(126) From Common Law to Civil Law: Navigating Contract Structure, Terminology and Pitfalls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, focusing on on the differences between common law and civil law contract structures, comparing English and Spanish contracts and discussing how translators can adapt documents for different legal systems.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Grace Shalhoub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also joined us to discuss takeaways from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(026) Beyond the Grave: Decoding French Inheritance Law<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where she discussed the various foundational legal principles governing French inheritance law.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked speakers and attendees to share a recap in our BlawG of their favorite legal session at ATA 66. If you want to write a recap please contact us at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:atalawdivision@gmail.com\"><b>atalawdivision@gmail.com<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many attendees expressed strong interest in seeing these speakers again in <\/span><b>Law Division webinars in 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially those who weren\u2019t able to attend the ATA Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Comparing Legal Systems and Contract Structures<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most engaging parts of the discussion focused on differences between <\/span><b>common law and civil law systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly in contract structure and drafting practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members talked about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growing presence of common law clauses in civil law contracts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How these cross-system contracts affect translation choices<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of explaining these differences clearly to clients<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was clear interest in organizing future webinars dedicated to comparative legal systems and contract analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Specialization, Visibility, and Professional Profiles<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also discussed the role of <\/span><b>specialization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in legal translation and interpreting, and how important it is to communicate that expertise clearly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topics included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educating clients about the difference between translators and interpreters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping ATA profiles current and accurate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making areas of legal specialization more visible in professional directories<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We told attendees that we are going to provide a webinar next year to help our members craft their ATA profiles, specially to show their specialization, and easy to share to potential clients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Networking, Blogging, and Collaboration Ideas<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We shared with attendees our ideas for future initiatives, and ways to collaborate with the Law Division including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Networking and co-working sessions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketing and business-focused work groups<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blog contributions and content sharing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlighting legal conferences relevant to translators and interpreters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Email Visibility and Spam Challenges<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also touched on a very important issue many of us face: <\/span><b>email visibility and spam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Members exchanged experiences and strategies for managing unsolicited messages while staying accessible for professional referrals and networking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Looking Ahead to 2026<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We closed the session by looking ahead to upcoming conferences, future webinar topics, and new ways to continue strengthening the Law Division community in 2026 and beyond.
