The content and materials are not asked at this stage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final decision on acceptance will be communicated during the week of June 5, 2026.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Proposal vs. Session Content<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>Important:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Submitting a proposal requires only the title, description, and bio (plus other personal and business information). You do <\/span><b>not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to have all your slides or materials ready at this stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your proposal is selected, you will be notified in June, which is when you start preparing your session content and materials. From our experience at past ATA Conferences, the final session content sometimes does not fully match the original title and description. This usually happens because of the time gap between submission and preparation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We strongly advise you to <\/span><b>stick as closely as possible to the proposal you submitted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While minor adjustments are allowed, your session needs to reflect what you initially proposed. In the webinar, we emphasized:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your title must <\/span><b>match your description and bio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>SEO matters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: consider terms attendees are likely to search for.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Specificity is key<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014just like in your description and bio, a specific title shows expertise and relevance.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This step is simple but important: a well-crafted title sets the tone for the entire proposal and draws the right audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>What Works Well in Legal Session Proposals<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the strongest messages from the webinar was this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Specificity wins.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong legal proposals clearly define:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1\ufe0f\u20e3 The Area of Law<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be precise. Not \u201clegal,\u201d but:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family law<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil procedure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corporate law<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International arbitration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2\ufe0f\u20e3 The Language Pair + Jurisdiction<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid general labels like \u201cSpanish\u201d or \u201cLatin America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, specify the legal systems involved, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English (U.S.) and English (England &amp; Wales)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish (Mexico)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish (Spain)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our profession, we are not working with language alone, we are working with legal systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when the language is the same, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terminology can vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another. Countries that share a language often have different legal definitions, procedures, and terminology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why specifying the jurisdiction is just as important as specifying the language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3\ufe0f\u20e3 The Target Audience<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid broad descriptions like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor legal translators\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor legal interpreters\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be specific about the professional niche and context, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal translators specialized in corporate law working with law firms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal interpreters specialized in family law working in state courts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This level of clarity signals expertise and makes your proposal stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><b>A Strong Example<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We referenced a previous session by Thomas West that clearly identified:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Legal session description:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span>U.S.-based<\/i><b><i> legal translators<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are sometimes asked to translate documents into British English<\/span><\/i><b><i> for clients in the United Kingdom or Europe<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although it\u2019s easy enough to change the spellcheck to English (U.K.) and use familiar terms such as &#8220;lift&#8221; instead of &#8220;elevator,&#8221; the challenge is to employ the <\/span><\/i><b><i>legal terminology of England and Wales (E&amp;W)<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which often differs significantly from the terms used by American lawyers. The<\/span><\/i><b><i> terminology of civil procedure<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in particular was completely overhauled in E&amp;W in 1999. More importantly, there are terms with completely different meanings on each side of the Atlantic.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Language pair and jurisdiction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> English, United States and England &amp; Wales<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Area of law:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Civil procedure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Audience:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> U.S.-based legal translators asked to produce translations for UK clients<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is the level of focus reviewers appreciate, value, and prioritize when providing feedback to ATA Conference planners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Writing a Strong Session Description<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the webinar we emphasized that your session description is the <\/span><b>core of your proposal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Keep in mind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the description you submit will be published exactly as submitted on the ATA67 conference website.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Key requirements:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximum 100 words<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paragraph form only (no bullet points or outlines)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English required<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spell out acronyms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carefully proofread for grammar, punctuation, and style<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, your description must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide a <\/span><b>clear summary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of what the session covers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly explain the <\/span><b>value for attendees<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be designed for a <\/span><b>specific experience level<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show why the topic is relevant for legal professionals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be clear, specific, audience-focused, and polished.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Writing an Effective Speaker Bio<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your bio supports your session description. Being specific is key here too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t write your entire curriculum vitae. Instead, focus on demonstrating why you are the right person to speak on the legal topic you chose. Highlight the aspects of your education and work experience that are directly relevant to your session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s an example:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rebecca Jowers\u2019 description and bio from last year clearly emphasize her expertise and background in the topic she presented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span>(58.0) \u201cPropiedad intelectual e industrial\u201d: Fundamentals of Intellectual Property for Legal T&amp;Is<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distinguishing <\/span><\/i><b><i>&#8220;propiedad intelectual&#8221; and &#8220;propiedad industrial,&#8221;<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this session will focus on <\/span><\/i><b><i>how intellectual property is defined and protected in the U.S. and Spanish-speaking jurisdictions<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The speaker will provide a concise summary of how copyrights, patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights may be acquired, defended, transferred, and (possibly) lost in both systems, detailing the application-to-grant process in each case. Key terminology will be reviewed in both English and Spanish, and attendees will receive bilingual glossaries of the terms discussed.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca Jowers is a Spanish-to-English freelance legal translator based in Madrid who <\/span><\/i><b><i>taught legal English in an LL.M. program<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (M\u00e1ster en Asesor\u00eda Jur\u00eddica de Empresas) at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid for 20 years. She previously worked as an <\/span><\/i><b><i>in-house legal translator in the Elzaburu intellectual property law firm<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She is the author of two reference works for translators and interpreters: L\u00e9xico tem\u00e1tico de terminolog\u00eda jur\u00eddica espa\u00f1ol-ingl\u00e9s and Diccionario de t\u00e9rminos y conceptos jur\u00eddicos espa\u00f1ol-ingles, as well as a 300-entry blog on Spanish-to-English legal terminology. She has a doctorate from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, a PhD from Michigan State University, and an MA from New York University.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Common Pitfalls to Avoid<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We discussed several frequent issues:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submitting overly broad or generic topics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failing to specify jurisdiction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Targeting beginners instead of advanced professionals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misalignment between title, description, and bio<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using AI to generate a proposal without properly reviewing or refining it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Using AI Smartly (and Carefully)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI can help you brainstorm or refine structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not submit generic, AI-sounding descriptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not rely on AI without adding your real expertise.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em>Everyone<\/em> can tell when something is written solely using AI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI should support your expertise\u2014not replace it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Balancing Advanced Content with Broad Appeal<\/b><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"50\" data-end=\"108\">One challenge we discussed is finding the balance between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Highly specialized content<\/li>\n<li>Broad relevance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"162\" data-end=\"264\">The sweet spot: <strong data-start=\"178\" data-end=\"264\">advanced, niche content that still solves a problem many legal professionals face.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"266\" data-end=\"719\">It is also important to remember that <strong data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"363\">most conference attendees are experienced professionals<\/strong> who often prefer <strong data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"430\">advanced sessions within their specialization<\/strong> when deciding which presentations to attend.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"1200\">Katja shared that when choosing sessions herself, she prefers to attend <strong data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"861\">advanced presentations even outside her immediate specialization<\/strong> because of the depth of learning they offer. For example, she attended a Law Division Distinguished Speaker session on <strong data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1004\">U.S. bankruptcy law<\/strong> that included examples in <strong data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1055\">Brazilian Portuguese<\/strong>. Although Portuguese is not her second language, the advanced level of the presentation gave her valuable tools she could later apply in her own language pair.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1500\">She had a similar experience last year with <strong data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1292\">Rebecca\u2019s session on intellectual property<\/strong>.
