For our Distinguished Speaker at the <\/span>ATA Conference in New Orleans<\/span><\/a> (October 24\u201327, 2018), PLD has the great honor of hosting Marco Neves, a prominent translator, language expert, and author from Portugal. He will be presenting a double session relevant to <\/span>all<\/span><\/i> translators interested in Portuguese and language diversity, entitled \u201c<\/span>How to Deal with Portuguese-Language Varieties: A Translator\u2019s View,<\/span><\/a>\u201d parts I and II (Saturday, 2:00\u20133:00, 3:30-4:30). The session will be presented in Portuguese and cover many variants of the language, even within each country. Marco has written extensively about differences and similarities in the Portuguese spoken in <\/span>Portugal<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Galicia<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Brazil<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Macau<\/span><\/a>, a <\/span>tiny Caribbean island<\/span><\/a>, and elsewhere. Translators who work from or into Portuguese of one country may discover valuable ways they can expand their business by learning other variants\u2014besides being entertained by Marco\u2019s delightful way of instructing through story-telling.<\/span><\/p>\n
Marco brings rich experience to the banquets he lays out on the translating table: as summed up in <\/span>one site<\/span><\/a>, \u201cHe has seven jobs, all directed toward language: translator, reviewer, professor, reader, conversationalist, and author. That\u2019s not seven? There\u2019s one more: he\u2019s also a father, with the job of telling stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
In more detail, Marco has been a professional translator since 2002 and the manager at the agency Eurologos-Lisboa since 2006; he teaches translation practice and technology at NOVA University of Lisbon, as well as on-site and <\/span>online courses<\/span><\/a> on translation project management, \u00a0memoQ, and \u201cintelligent writing\u201d; and he was president of APET (Portuguese Association of Translation Companies) from 2015 to 2018. In his intriguing blog <\/span>Certas Palavras: Linguas, Livros e Outras Viagens<\/span><\/i><\/a>, he writes fascinating posts about adventures in language, <\/span>playful comparisons of terms<\/span><\/a> in different Portuguese dialects, stories of the <\/span>history of Portuguese<\/span><\/a>, or the latest <\/span>book he\u2019s savoring<\/span><\/a>. He often tries to <\/span>dispel prejudices against different variants of Portuguese<\/span><\/a> and is not shy about bringing up controversial issues like the <\/span>Acordo Ortogr\u00e1fico<\/span><\/a> or the <\/span>politics of Galician spelling<\/span><\/a>. Although many blogs have suffered declining reader commentary in recent years, Marco\u2019s wide readership in Portugal, Galicia, and Brazil still carry on lively discussions over every weekly post\u2014and even nominated his blog to compete for the <\/span>Pr\u00e9mio Blogs do Ano 2018<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>With a gift for communicating arcane linguistic data in everyday language and a flair for story-telling, he has written four lively books on language, often using a fictional framework to present his information: Doze Segredos da L\u00edngua Portuguesa<\/i><\/a> (2016), A Baleia Que Engoliu um Espanhol<\/i><\/a> (2017), A Incr\u00edvel Hist\u00f3ria Secreta da L\u00edngua Portuguesa<\/i><\/a> (2017), and Jos\u00e9 Cardoso Pires e o Leitor Desassossegado<\/i><\/a> (2018).
