The\u00a0PEN American\u00a0Center<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0announced yesterday, March 1st, that the winner of this year\u2019s\u00a0Translation Prize is\u00a0Katrina Dodson<\/a><\/strong>, who translated\u00a0Clarice Lispector<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0The Complete Stories<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, published by New Directions last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur unanimous selection of\u00a0The Complete Stories<\/em>\u00a0underscores the absolute pleasure of being steeped in Lispector\u2019s deep intellect and her striking, varied portraits of human interaction and intimacy, rendered rich and vivid by Dodson\u2019s steady hand,\u201d the judges said. Other shortlisted works included two Russian, one Bulgarian, and one Italian book in translation published in English in 2015.<\/p>\n

Since the PEN Literary Award was created in 1963, only two other Portuguese-to-English translations had been\u00a0honored:\u00a0Margaret Jull Costa<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s rendition of\u00a0The Maias<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0E\u00e7a de Queiroz<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in 2008 and Harriet De On\u00eds\u2019 translation of\u00a0Sagarana, a Cycle of Stories<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, by\u00a0Jo\u00e3o Guimar\u00e3es Rosa<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in 1967.<\/p>\n
