We are proud to announce that award-winning literary translator\u00a0Daniel Hahn<\/a>\u00a0will be our\u00a0Guest Speaker during this year\u2019s\u00a0ATA Annual Conference in San Francisco<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many Portuguese translators and interpreters believe our language is underrated in the world, especially given the number of speakers and the international prominence of Portuguese-speaking countries. However, as a Portuguese-to-English translator,\u00a0Daniel shows\u00a0us through his work that literature in translation has been an ambassador of\u00a0our language and culture.<\/p>\n

In the past few years, there seems to have been a favorable wave of translations of books originally written in Portuguese. For instance, Granta edited an issue on\u00a0The Best of Young Brazilian Novelists<\/a>\u00a0in 2012;\u00a0Words Without Borders<\/a>\u00a0has highlighted a variety of Portuguese-speaking voices, authors and translators alike; a\u00a0PEN\/Heim Translation Fund<\/a>\u00a0was recently granted for the translation of a Brazilian novel; and many translations from Portuguese have been nominated for international literary awards, including the\u00a0Independent Foreign Fiction Prize<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award<\/a>.\u00a0Daniel himself was the recipient of the\u00a02007 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize<\/a>\u00a0for his translation of \u201cThe Book of Chameleons: A Novel<\/a>\u201d by Angolan novelist Jos\u00e9 Eduardo Agualusa, and was\u00a0shortlisted in this year\u2019s The Man Booker International Prize<\/a>\u00a0for his translation of \u201cA General Theory of Oblivion<\/a>,\u201d also written by Agualusa.<\/p>\n

Having Daniel Hahn as our Guest Speaker will help PLD members become aware of these developments, which may encourage them to ride the wave\u00a0and understand the\u00a0effects of the exposure of our language in\u00a0the global market\u2015whether we\u00a0work with literature or not.<\/p>\n

Besides working with literature written in Portuguese\u2015including fiction by novelists from Europe, Africa and the Americas and non-fiction by writers ranging from Portuguese Nobel laureate Jos\u00e9 Saramago to Brazilian soccer player\u00a0Pel\u00e9\u2015Daniel has also translated books from Spanish and French into English. Additionally, he has been involved with translation activities and associations, having acted\u00a0as chair of the\u00a0UK\u2019s Translators Association of the Society of Authors<\/a>\u00a0and national programme director of the\u00a0British Centre for Literary Translation<\/a>.\u00a0He is currently chair of the\u00a0Society of Authors<\/a>\u2015the UK\u2019s writers\u2019 union\u2015, regularly reviews translations in the national press, runs translation workshops all over the world, and speaks frequently on the radio, at public festivals and conferences on translation-related issues.<\/p>\n
