Corruption, money laundering, and other white-collar crime scandals happen worldwide, and their repercussions stretch far beyond the borders of each individual country. Whether in actions for damages, investigations for recovery and repatriation of assets, reports to investors, or press releases, these cases generate a great demand for translation. The speaker will discuss some of the main cases with international repercussions and the potential translation opportunities arising from them. Resources for those interested in this area will also be covered.<\/p>\n

Manuela Sampaio<\/strong>\u00a0is an English and Portuguese translator and interpreter. She has over eight years of experience as a translator, working mainly with legal and business translations. She has a law degree and a diploma in corporate law. She has also worked as a conference and liaison interpreter. In addition to ATA, she is also a member of the Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Brasileira de Tradutores e Int\u00e9rpretes (ABRATES) and is currently the ABRATES representative in her hometown of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.<\/p>\n

<\/b>Q: What made you choose this theme?
\n<\/strong>A: Given the current political scandals in Brazil, there has been a lot of work related to financial crimes and money laundering.<\/p>\n

Q: How long have you been working in your area of specialization?
\n<\/strong>A: I\u2019ve been a legal translator for eight years.<\/p>\n

Q: How many times have you presented at an ATA Conference?
\n<\/strong>A: This is my second time; the first was last year.<\/p>\n

Q: How will the audience profit from your session?
\n<\/strong>A: Unfortunately, financial crimes will remain in the news and the courts for quite some time, the idea is to talk about the work available to translators in relation to such crimes.<\/p>\n

Q: What did you want to be as a child?
\n<\/strong>A: An explorer and a writer!<\/p>\n

Q: What was your first career choice?
\n<\/strong>A: I was a corporate lawyer before I became a translator.<\/p>\n

Q: What is your favorite book\/movie?
\n<\/strong>A: I think I\u2019ve read \u201cLittle Women\u201d at least ten times and must have watched \u201cThe Shawshank Redemption\u201d about the same number of times.<\/p>\n

Q: What is your favorite hobby?
\n<\/strong>A: I love running, because you can do it anywhere. It\u2019s a great way to see a new city through different angles. I\u2019m going to be doing the Golden Gate Half Marathon with a few friends right after the ATA Conference.<\/p>\n

Q: What\/who inspires you in the profession?
\n<\/strong>A: I\u2019d rather not single any one out, there are so many great colleagues I admire! I\u2019m inspired mostly by those who see translation and interpretation as a business, not just a vocation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
