With ATA65 just days away, we\u2019re eagerly anticipating the sessions led by our Portuguese Language Division (PLD) peers. We’ve curated a list of must-see presentations to recognize their contributions and encourage PLD members to attend.<\/p>\n

This year, the Portuguese Language Division will host a dynamic duo of seasoned translators and interpreters from S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, at the ATA\u2019s Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. Carmen Reis and Marly Moro bring a wealth of expertise from the vibrant and challenging interpreting scene of South America\u2019s largest metropolis.<\/p>\n

Marly Moro<\/a>, an ATA-certified translator and experienced conference interpreter, has over 20 years of experience interpreting for heads of state, Nobel Prize winners, scientists, and entertainment icons. You might even recognize her voice from the Globes or the Grammys ceremonies. In her session, \u201cLive Translation in TV Broadcast Events: Catwalking with confidence in large-audience assignments,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> she will delve into the complexities of conveying cultural references and emotions during live broadcasts and high-stakes events. Marly aims to share some of the innovative strategies and techniques she uses, which can be applied to both conference interpreting and other areas of translation.<\/p>\n

Carmen Reis<\/a>, a professional translator, interpreter, and subtitler from Brazil, will lead the session \u201cField Interpreting: The human touch that robots just can\u2019t replace.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> She plans to explore the unique challenges of field interpreting, drawing from her extensive experience working on-site in diverse settings, including crop fields, farms, manufacturing plants, industrial facilities, mills, businesses, slaughterhouses, and consumers\u2019 homes. Carmen will offer practical tips and highlight the irreplaceable \u201chuman factor\u201d in these dynamic environments, contrasting it with what machines may offer.<\/p>\n

Other distinguished PLD members presenting at ATA65 include Cris Silva, Elena Langdon, Filipe Alverca, Jonas Nicotra, and Jeffrey D. Stewart. We\u2019re also excited to welcome Reginaldo Francisco, our colleague from Santa Catarina, Brazil, and a longtime member of the Wordfast support team.<\/p>\n

Cris Silva<\/a>, a conference interpreter, translator, voice-over talent, and Zumba instructor extraordinaire, will leverage her experience as a terminology manager in her session, \u201cWord<\/em><\/strong> Mining Wonders: Corpus building and terminology extraction.\u201d<\/strong><\/em> She will explore advanced tools for in-depth text analysis and the many features of the corpus manager tool SketchEngine.<\/p>\n

Elena Langdon<\/a>, a seasoned translator, conference and community interpreter, and interpreter trainer, will focus on the standards of practice for healthcare interpreters in her session, \u201c\u2018Do you think he\u2019s crazy?\u2019\u2014Teaming Up with Mental Health Providers.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> She will discuss the specific requirements and protocols for interpreting in mental health contexts, offering insights on neuropsychological testing instruments, pre- and debriefing sessions, and strategies for avoiding or mitigating vicarious trauma.<\/p>\n

Filipe Alverca<\/a>, with nearly 20 years of experience in translation across fields like law, oil and gas, technology, games, marketing, and entertainment, will present \u201cUtopia vs. Reality: A win-win approach to vendor management.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> He will share his experiences with Language Service Providers (LSPs) and encourage a discussion aimed at generating constructive ideas to improve the localization market.<\/p>\n

Jonas Nicotra<\/a>, with almost three decades of experience as a translator, interpreter, localization specialist, and educator, will participate in the panel \u201cLet’s Talk! Teaching the Next Generation of Language Professionals.”<\/em><\/strong> This discussion will focus on supporting educators and trainers who are preparing the next generation of language professionals.<\/p>\n

Jeffrey D. Stewart<\/a>, a certified Portuguese-to-English translator who also translates from Arabic to English, is part of the PLD Leadership Committee and serves as the editor of our Blog. In his session, \u201cBe the B: Building a more sustainable future through B Corp Certification,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he will provide an overview of the B Corp Certification, its importance for for-profit organizations, and the opportunities it offers for language services within the T&I industry.<\/p>\n

Reginaldo Francisco<\/a>, a translator with extensive IT experience as a member of Wordfast’s technical support team, will deliver two sessions. In his first, \u201cWritten Sign Languages: SignWriting and other attempts,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he will draw on his experience from a Brazilian Sign Language undergraduate program to discuss various written systems being developed for sign language and alternative transcription methods. His second session, \u201cA Guided Tour (Full of Shortcuts) Through Your Keyboard,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> will uncover the secrets and features of the QWERTY or AZERTY keyboard, highlighting shortcuts and key combinations for use across operating systems, programs, and CAT tools.<\/p>\n

While ATA has announced that conference sessions will unfortunately not be recorded, we\u2019ll rely on PLD members and attendees to share insights and experiences to give you a sense of the conference as much as possible.
