The reader\u2019s attention is in fact drawn to the subject-matter of the text. What might possibly make us aware that we are dealing with a translation is a multitude of <em>translation faux pas<\/em>. The best way to avoid them is to adequately understand the situational subject-matter and the context, which in fact is an essential part of a translator\u2019s competency and professionalism.<\/p>\n<p><em>Situational subject-matter<\/em> includes the persons, objects and phenomena found in the text, as well as the relationships between them. According to translation and interpretation scholar E. Breus, the same extralinguistic situation can be perceived and described differently in different languages. [1] Clearly, without situational subject-matter awareness, a translator is not able to produce an adequate translation and fully convey the message meant by the author in the source language.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Research findings<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The situational subject-matter awareness is vital for understanding what the original text is about. To illustrate this statement, the following examples are quite appropriate:<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENGLISH \u2013 RUSSIAN: Why is it that smokers always <u>head out<\/u> coatless, no matter what the weather? (<\/strong>Head out<strong> \u2013<\/strong> <strong><em>\u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u044f\u0442<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u0438\u0437<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u0437\u0434\u0430\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u043d\u0430<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u0443\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0443<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>= are leaving the building<\/em><\/strong> rather than <em>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043c\u044f\u0442\u0441\u044f<\/em> <em>\u0432\u044b\u0439\u0442\u0438<\/em> or <em>\u043d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043b\u044f\u044e\u0442\u0441\u044f<\/em> <em>= are trying to leave<\/em> or <em>are headed for<strong>.<\/strong><\/em><strong>) <\/strong>[2]<\/p>\n<p><strong>RUSSIAN \u2013 ENGLISH: <u>\u0411\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0444\u043e\u043d\u0434<\/u> \u0443\u043d\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0442\u0435\u0442\u0430 \u0441\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u043b\u044f\u0435\u0442 \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0430 \u043c\u0438\u043b\u043b\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430 \u044d\u043a\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043f\u043b\u044f\u0440\u043e\u0432 \u043a\u043d\u0438\u0433. <\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><em>\u0411\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/em> <em>\u0444\u043e\u043d\u0434<\/em> is not the <em>library fund,<\/em> which would be a word-for-word translation, but<strong> <em>the number of books held.<\/em>) <\/strong>[3]<\/p>\n<p>Without situational subject-matter awareness, the wrong translation is unavoidable. In a TV program about rock musicians of the 1980s who arranged concerts for charity, it was said that the musicians called themselves representatives of the <em>Band Aid generation<\/em>. According to Wikipedia, the term originated from a charity super-group featuring mainly British and Irish musicians founded in 1984 to raise money for anti-famine efforts in Ethiopia by releasing the song \u201cDo they know it\u2019s Christmas?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The translation of this phrase into Russian came out as <em>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/em> <em>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u043f\u043f\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439<\/em> <em>\u043f\u043e\u043c\u043e\u0449\u0438<\/em> (literally \u201cthe generation of group assistance\u201d), which was not correct. The word <em>Band-Aid<\/em> (originally meaning a brand of an adhesive bandage) was split into two words by the translator: <em>band<\/em> (a musical group, as in <em>jazz band<\/em>) and <em>aid<\/em> (assistance).<\/p>\n<p>The context, however, made it clear that the rock musicians considered it their mission to provide emergency aid for the needy\u2014just like <em>a Band-Aid<\/em> is used for emergency purposes, e.g., when a person accidentally cuts his\/her finger. The translator should have used a metaphorical expression, but the major challenge was <em>to understand the situational subject-matter<\/em> for the purpose of conveying the meaning in Russian.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>context<\/em> is what makes it easier to understand <em>the situational subject-matter<\/em> and produce the correct translation, taking into account <em>what<\/em> and <em>how<\/em> they say\/write in this or that situation in the target (Russian) language.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When watching American movies, Russian-speaking viewers fluent in English are quite often able to notice incorrect translations of English phrases. For instance, in a telephone conversation, the question<strong> <em>Are you there?<\/em> <\/strong>should be rendered in Russian as <strong><em>\u0422\u044b<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u0441\u043b\u044b\u0448\u0438\u0448\u044c<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>?<\/em><\/strong> (literally,<strong> <em>Can you hear me?<\/em><\/strong>) instead of <strong><em>\u0422\u044b<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u0442\u0430\u043c<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>?<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>As a rule, the meaning of the word becomes clear as soon as it is placed in a sentence, which serves as <em>a narrow context<\/em>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ENGLISH \u2013 RUSSIAN: <em>The settlements<\/em> <\/strong>between companies were made without delay<strong>. \u2013 <\/strong><strong><em>\u0420\u0430\u0441\u0447\u0435\u0442\u044b<\/em><\/strong> (not <em>\u0443\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0443\u043b\u0438\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/em><em>,<\/em> <em>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0435\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/em>, etc.) \u043c\u0435\u0436\u0434\u0443 \u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430\u043d\u0438\u044f\u043c\u0438 \u0431\u044b\u043b\u0438 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432\u0435\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044b \u0431\u0435\u0437 \u0437\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0436\u043a\u0438<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>RUSSIAN \u2013 ENGLISH: <\/strong>\u041d\u0430\u043c \u0431\u044b\u043b\u043e \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0435\u043d\u043e <strong><em>\u043e\u0446\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/em><\/strong> \u0435\u0433\u043e \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0442\u0443. \u2013 They suggested that we<strong> <em>evaluate<\/em> <\/strong>(not <em>appreciate, estimate<\/em>, etc.) his work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>But in other cases, to understand the situational subject-matter and the meaning of the word or a phrase<strong>, <em>a broad context<\/em> <\/strong>is needed. It may include several sentences, a paragraph, or even the text of the whole article or video, as was the case with the <em>Band Aid generation<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That said, a translator should not overdo it by trying to produce a special effect in the process of translation. The following example seems to be a good illustration of this statement.<\/p>\n<p>In May 1995, an American was interpreting during the meeting between Clinton and Yeltsin in the USA. Russia\u2019s President sarcastically said, \u201c\u0412\u043e\u0442 \u0432\u044b, \u0436\u0443\u0440\u043d\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0441\u0442\u044b, \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0430\u043b\u0438 <em>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043b<\/em>. \u041d\u0430 \u0441\u0430\u043c\u043e\u043c \u0434\u0435\u043b\u0435 \u044d\u0442\u043e \u0432\u044b \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0438\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c\u201d. This is what the interpreter said: \u201cYou, journalists, said it would be <em>a disaster<\/em>. In fact, <em>you are a disaster.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<em>(Clinton is laughing.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps in that situation it would have been more appropriate to use the verb\u00a0<em>to fail<\/em>: <em>\u201cYou journalists predicted failure. In fact, it\u2019s you who have failed.\u201d<\/em> The word <em>disaster<\/em> was too strong, and was surely a case of the interpreter \u201coverdoing\u201d the interpretation. [4]<\/p>\n<p>Summarizing the reasons for failing to understand the situational subject-matter of an utterance, it is possible to identify the following ones:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Copying a grammar\/lexical structure of a sentence without taking the trouble to analyze its implication (e.g.: <strong><em>Don\u2019t <\/em><\/strong><em>cross the bridge <strong>until<\/strong> you come to it \u2013 <\/em>is NOT <em>\u041d\u0435<\/em> <em>\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/em> <em>\u0433\u043e\u043f<\/em><em>, <\/em><em>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u0430<\/em> <em>\u043d\u0435<\/em> <em>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0447\u0438\u0448\u044c<\/em><em>, <\/em>but <em>\u0411\u0443\u0434\u0435\u043c<\/em> <em>\u0440\u0435\u0448\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/em> <em>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0431\u043b\u0435\u043c\u044b<\/em> <em>\u043f\u043e<\/em> <em>\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/em> <em>\u0438\u0445<\/em> <em>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Misunderstanding the flow of an utterance which results in unacceptable splitting of set expressions, and consequently \u2013 in the wrong translation, as in the above example of <em>Band-Aid generation.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Lack of knowledge of professional jargons and idioms, which makes it hard to convey the meaning \u2013 in the field of business, in particular. The following examples are vivid enough illustrate this statement:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The proposal <em>went over big<\/em> with big business (<em>to go over big<\/em> \u2013 to succeed, to be approved of)<\/li>\n<li>Let\u2019s <em>deal<\/em> him <em>in<\/em> and <em>give <\/em>him<em> a piece of the cake<\/em> (<em>to deal smb in<\/em> \u2013 to include smb in an activity or business; to give smb a piece of cake \u2013 to share or divide profits with another person.<\/li>\n<li>The business is slack, and our sales level hardly reaches the <em>break-even point<\/em> (a point at which sales cover costs but do not show profits) [5].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Conclusion<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the above means that <em>situational subject-matter awareness <\/em>\u2014 as an important translation issue \u2014 should be considered as an indispensable skill in translation and interpretation, alongside with such skills as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>discerning <em>narrow and broad contexts<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>understanding <em>realia and realities, <\/em>as well as <em>culture-bound objects<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>being competent in<em> the terminology<\/em> of the text\u2019s content or field of studies and research;<\/li>\n<li>recognizing the <em>dangers of carbon-paper (word-for-word) translation<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>observing <em>the norms of the target language. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u0411\u0440\u0435\u0443\u0441, \u0415.\u0418. \u041e\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0432\u044b \u0442\u0435\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0438 \u0438 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438 \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0430 \u0441 \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430 \u043d\u0430 \u0430\u043d\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 [Breus, E.
