It is compiled by John Hutchins on behalf of the European Association for Machine Translation, but it does not contain just references to machine translation tools, but also to the traditional translation memory tools. Election of these officers is held every two years in accordance with the LTD bylaws. The results of the election will be announced at the LTD Annual Meeting, which will be held during ATA’s 50th Annual Conference in New York City, October 28-31, 2009.
LTD OFFICER DUTIES
Officers must be members of the Language Technology Division as well as voting members of ATA. You will find a summary of duties for both the administrator and assistant administrator positions online .
Serving in a division leadership role provides enormous opportunity, both professionally and personally. This past week I have been simultaneously working on two very large projects — one day on this one, the next day on the other, then on the first one again . . . you get the idea. One is in Trados TagEditor and the other in Star Transit. I don’t particularly mind working in either of them. In fact, I have enjoyed the different environments of these particular projects with excellent termbases and TMs — if it weren’t for the keyboard shortcuts! For the last few years, ATA has hosted a Tools Forum at the annual conference. Tool vendors are invited to answer a set of questions in writing, and their answers are provided to attendees. They are then invited to talk for a few minutes each on the stage about their product. For the first time, the LTD is providing an electronic copy of the handout, which contains vendors’ answers to the following questions:
As a user of TO3000 (Translation Office 3000, an invoicing program for translators), I receive regular messages from AIT. It seems they have just released an inexpensive translation memory tool called AnyMem. TO3000 is a pretty stable program, so AnyMem probably is too. Unfortunately, it works within MS Word, like SDL Trados and the Classic Wordfast, but it also seems to be compatible with SDL Trados segmented files and is an order of magnitude cheaper.
You can try it free for 30 days, and it only costs 89 euros. If anyone has tried it, please post a comment!

In an interesting development, Systran (which develops machine translation software) and MultiCorpora (which develops more traditional translation environment software) have joined forces.

Unfortunately for freelancers, it looks like this will be implemented only in the corporate version… at least for now.

Why do those pesky agency customers ask for delivery in the SDL Trados segmented file format? A few years ago, translators had to have Trados or know about the few programs like DejaVu that could import/export it (personally, I never got DejaVu to sucessfully import a Trados segmented file, but I know translators who have).
I was delighted when Jost Zetzsche wrote me today telling me that many other tools allow translators to provide translations in this popular format. Read his article in Accurapid’s Translation Journal.
In summary, DéjàVu, Heartsome, JIVEFusion, MemoQ, MetaTexis, MultiTrans, SDLX, Similis, Swordfish and Wordfast can all export SDL Trados segmented files. See our Environtment Tools Page for links to these tools.
I would be interested to hear from readers (in the comments section) if you have been using one of these other tools to produce Trados segmented files for clients.
