If you work with legal translation, interpreting, or international arbitration—or simply want to strengthen your understanding of arbitration terminology—this is a great opportunity to learn from an experienced legal translator and attorney who brings both language and legal expertise to the topic.
Speaking the Language of Arbitration
International arbitration comes with its own complex terminology, and translating terms accurately often requires more than simply finding the equivalent word in another language.
In this 90-minute webinar, Maria Eugenia will take us on an introductory tour of three major arbitration frameworks—ICSID, UNCITRAL, and the ICC—and explore how similar concepts and procedures can be expressed differently depending on the applicable rules.
The session will offer a great opportunity to better understand the terminology we encounter in arbitration matters and the potential pitfalls that can arise when seemingly equivalent terms are not actually interchangeable.
What You’ll Take Away
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Explore the different arbitration frameworks and rules of UNCITRAL, ICC, and ICSID.
- Compare terminology used for similar procedures and filings across different arbitration systems.
- Identify common terminology differences and false equivalences.
- Learn strategies for researching arbitration rules and terminology depending on the case involved.
No prior experience in arbitration is required, making this a great opportunity for both those who regularly work in the field and those who are interested in learning more about it.
About Our Speaker
We’re especially happy to have Maria Eugenia Garcia leading this session. Maria Eugenia is an active and valued member of the ATA Law Division, and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to learn from her expertise.
She is an English into Spanish Certified Translator and an Attorney-at-Law, graduated from the University of Buenos Aires. She has worked as a freelance legal translator since 1999, providing services to law firms, major companies, and other professionals in the legal industry.
Her experience also includes teaching English legal language to translators at the Buenos Aires Translators’ Association (CTPCBA) and the University of Buenos Aires, as well as providing comparative law training to attorneys at several law firms in Argentina.
With her background in both law and legal translation, Maria Eugenia brings a particularly valuable perspective to this topic.
