Networking is one of the key benefits of attending ATA65, and making the most of it can significantly enhance your professional growth. Here are some detailed tips and best practices to help you navigate networking opportunities:
- Have Your Marketing Materials Ready: Business cards, brochures, and a concise elevator pitch can go a long way. Make sure you’re prepared to communicate what sets you apart as a legal translator or interpreter.
- Plan Your Sessions: Review the schedule in advance, and prioritize the sessions that align with your professional goals. Attending specialized sessions not only expands your knowledge but also introduces you to colleagues with shared interests.
- Maximize After-Hours Events: Networking isn’t limited to the conference sessions! Events like the Law Division Lunch offer a great opportunity to meet fellow translators and interpreters in a relaxed environment.
- Join the Conversations: Don’t be shy to engage with others—whether it’s at the lunch table, in between sessions, or during off-site events. Introduce yourself, ask questions, and show genuine interest in what others are doing.
- Best Practices for Networking:
- Prepare Your Introduction: Be ready with a brief, compelling introduction about yourself and your services. Focus on what makes your legal translation or interpretation skills unique.
- Be a Good Listener: Engaging with others isn’t just about talking. Take time to listen and ask questions, as this helps build stronger connections.
- Use Social Media to Your Advantage: Follow the event hashtags on social media and engage with speakers, attendees, and vendors before and during the conference. It’s a great way to connect with those you haven’t met yet in person.
- Follow Up: After the event, don’t forget to send follow-up emails or LinkedIn messages to those you’ve met. Personalizing your message with a reference to your conversation will help leave a lasting impression.
