The Chinese language varies across different regions, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and beyond. Notable distinctions also exist between spoken and written forms. This CLD Cafe session seeks to demystify Traditional Chinese characters by first exploring the origins of the Chinese language. The presenter will examine the sophisticated meanings behind traditional characters and outline the key differences between traditional and simplified Chinese characters, as well as between written and spoken Chinese.

Presenter: Gene Hsu

Gene Hsu is not only a professional interpreter-translator, but a singer and ethnomusicologist. She is an ATA voting member. Gene is engaged in intercultural and interdisciplinary research in music and translation. She has presented her papers at international conferences around the world. Furthermore, her research draws attention to the historical and cultural significance of traditional languages, songwriting and song translation. Gene hopes to bridge cultural and language gaps and to contribute towards better understanding and world peace.
