Hiroki Fukuyama (福山廣毅) is an ATA-certified English-Japanese translator based in Texas. He has more than 21 years of experience in the translation industry after having worked in the engineering and electronics industry. For the JLD, Hiroki primarily served as Secretary/Treasurer in the days when this position looked for and negotiated with venues for the JLD Dinner, one of the main social functions for the division. He also helped members register for events, collected participation fees from members on site, and took minutes at the JLD annual meetings during the ATA conferences. He also served on the Planning Committee and the Nominating Committee for the division.
①どうしてJLDに加入したのか。
第2のキャリアの候補として翻訳業を考慮していた折、ATAという団体の存在を知り、メンバーの方々にお話を伺ったところ、幾つかいただいたアドバイスの中で、ATAへの加盟およびAnnual Conferenceへの参加を勧められたから。初めて参加したAnnual Conferenceで多くのJLDの方々が温かく迎え入れてくださったことが、翻訳業に参入する上での後押しとなった。
②どうしてJLD役員、委員会などのボランティア活動に参加したのか。
翻訳業に携わっていく中で、JLDメンバーの先輩方からいろいろと学ぶことが多く、微力ながら自分なりの貢献を通じてお礼がしたかった。
③どのような役割を果たしたか。
（JLD役員である）Secretary/Treasurerを務めたが、主な役割はdivision dinnerの幹事。
④覚えている場合、活動時期はいつからいつまでだったか。
活動期間の年度はよく覚えていないけれど、当時のAdministratorはCourtney McNabさん、Richard Mottさん、Masae Sullivanさんで、多分、計５年間ではなかったか。
⑤JLD独自の刊行物（An Introduction to the Professions of Translation and InterpretationやThe Patent Handbook）の企画・出版・販売、ATAカンファレンスでのWelcome Reception後のJLDメンバーだけの集まり、JLDディナー、カンファレンスでのJLD独自セッション準備のためのPlanning Committee立ち上げなどが、JLDが始めた取り組みとして挙げられるが、どのような動機からこれらの活動に関与したのか。
多くの先輩方がボランティアで精力的に貢献されておられたのを見て啓発されたから。
⑥JLDが1987年に創設されて以来、存続している要因は何だと考えるか。
多くのメンバーのボランティア精神に支えられてきたからだと思う。皆さんの利他のお気持ちに学ぶところが多かった。
⑦自分にとってのJLDの意義とは何か。もしJLDがなかったら、どうしていたと思うか。
JLDに出会ってなかったら、はたして職業翻訳者になっていたかどうか分からない。
⑧他のDivisionとは違う、JLDが培ってきた文化はどのようなものか。
利他の心、ボランティアの精神だと思う。先輩方の背中を見て後輩たちが啓発され、それが伝統として受け継がれてきたのではないか。
