Invitation to Law Division Webinar: False Friends in Spanish-English Legal Translation – June 19

June 11, 2025 By Law Division Leave a Comment

June 19, 2025 | 1:00–2:30 PM ET | LawD Members Only

We’re excited to continue our 2025 webinar series with a presentation by Rebecca Jowers, a longtime and valued member of the ATA Law Division.

Rebecca has contributed to our community for many years, offering her expertise through legal presentations at the ATA Conference and a popular series of posts on our Blawg. Her insights have helped clarify complex legal language and offered practical guidance for Spanish-English legal translators.

If you haven’t yet read her series “Things Legal Translators Need to Know: What’s in the Código Civil?”, you can find it here:

  • Part 1: Derecho de la persona and Derecho de familia
  • Part 2: Derecho de obligaciones

We’re honored to welcome her as the presenter of our second Law Division webinar of the year.

What to Expect

In this presentation, we will delve into a practical framework for handling false friends in Spanish-English legal translation. Attendees will gain a renewed analytical perspective and leave with more accurate, context-aware, and culturally attuned translation options for legal false cognates.

About Rebecca

Rebecca Jowers is a Spanish-English freelance legal translator and professor of Legal English in an LL.M. program (Máster en Asesoría Jurídica de Empresas) at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, having previously worked as an in-house legal translator in the Elzaburu intellectual property law firm.

She is the author of two reference works for translators and interpreters: Léxico temático de terminología jurídica español-inglés and Diccionario de términos y conceptos jurídicos español-ingles (Tirant lo Blanch, 2015, 2023), as well as a 300-entry blog on ES-EN legal terminology at rebeccajowers.com.
