ATA Interpreters Division

Letter to members – October 2019

Update from the ATA Interpreters Division

[id logo]We look forward to seeing you at the ATA 60th Annual Conference in Palm Springs from October 23 to 26.

Our Distinguished Speaker

Indigenous Migration to the US: Historical perspective, contemporary problems, and the struggle for the recognition of the rights of indigenous interpreters – Odilia Romero
Ms. Romero is a native speaker of Zapotec who interprets in the courts and the hospitals who has been training indigenous interpreters since 1994. She provides support to LAPD and cultural training to other organization, as well as being the chair of the Frente Indígena de Organizaciones Binacionales. Ms. Romero has helped courts and other organizations connect with indigenous interpreters who can provide interpreting services in the right language for the right speaker. As the coordinator of CIELO, she has been instrumental in coordinating an indigenous literature conference in the LA library in 2019.

These two sites give information about her work:

  • www.fiob.org

There are 15 sessions in the interpreting track, which cover the following topics:

  • Tools
  • Business planning
  • Training
  • Indigenous interpreters
  • Our professional identity: sessions about who we are in the courtroom, the advances of AI and interpreting at immigration detention centers

Elections

All voting members were sent information on voting in the 2019 ATA Elections. Voting members include Credentialed Interpreters. The Active Membership Review page now has a link to the Credentialed Interpreter process as well: https://www.atanet.org/membership/memb_review_online.php

Keep in mind that you must be a voting member by the official date of record—usually a month before the conference—to vote in ATA elections.
If you are already a voting member and you become a Credentialed Interpreter,
1. you get a ribbon to wear at the conference…
2. clients find you when they look for interpreters in your area. They are starting to search for certified interpreters using this designation. https://www.atanet.org/onlinedirectories/interpreter_credential.php

Annual meeting

We look forward to meeting with all our members at sessions and at the annual meeting. Please review the reports we have submitted to the Board as well as our analysis of the 2019 survey of our members. We plan to continue the discussion regarding what our members want the Division to look like and how you would like to help at the conference. We will have time for input at the Annual Meeting on Thursday from 4:45 pm to 5:45 pm.
All 4,100 of us are the Interpreters Division. As Administrators, we are the voice of the members and the team coordinators. We look forward to meeting the rest of the Division in person at Palm Springs later on this month.

Yours,

Helen Eby and Lorena Ortiz Schneider
The ID Administration Team
