CLD Café on Feb 8th, 2025 Online and Offline Resources for Chinese into English Translation

Technical terms, Communist Party jargon, and proper nouns such as company names present difficulties for Chinese into English translators because literal translations of these terms are often inaccurate or incomprehensible. Fortunately, others have grappled with these same problems and have posted their solutions online and in print. This session introduces translators of all levels to these helpful, free online and offline references. We’ll discuss the best online dictionaries for technical translators, sources of official or unofficial English translations of Party catchphrases, tips and tools for translating Chinese company names, and many other web-based and hardcopy resources that make translators’ lives easier.

Presenters:

  • Ben Murphy, CT
Ben Murphy, CT is the translation manager for the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) at Georgetown University, where he serves as translation project manager and editor primarily for English translations of Chinese artificial intelligence industry and technology policy documents. Prior to joining CSET in 2019, he had a 14-year career at the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. He is an ATA-certified Chinese into English translator.
  • Eve Zhu
