Switching Tracks

September 19, 2025 By JLD Administrator 2 Comments

The JLD Editorial Committee is pleased to announce a new series entitled “Switching Tracks.”

The translation and interpretation landscape has changed significantly since the advent and mass adoption of AI tools. During this time of flux, many linguists may have contemplated–or are now considering–switching from freelance to in-house or vice versa. Dreaming about being your own boss or having a benefits package is one thing, leaving the professional environment you’ve grown comfortable with is another. To be forewarned is to be forearmed with such a monumental shift; in that vein, the Editorial Committee reached out to JLD members to learn about their experiences switching career tracks. We sincerely hope you enjoy learning about and from your peers. And for those taking the plunge, may your own tracks switch smoothly!

JLD Editorial Committee

I’d also like to share my story of switching from a Mandarin interpreter/translator in Beijing to a Japanese interpreter/translator in Australia, if you’re interested. Or switching from a community on-site interpreter to a remote interpreter/translator since the COVID-19 pandemic.
