About Us

ATA-LD is the Literary Division of the American Translators Association. We aim to connect ATA members working on translation for publication, which includes the literary translation of prose and poetry, as well as book translation in general. We enthusiastically welcome translators who don’t work in book and literary translation, but are interested in the subject, regardless of their working language. The LD was established in 1985 and currently has members working in dozens of language pairs. Besides their translation activities, our members are teachers (from K-12 to graduate level), poets, journalists, and editors, to mention a few.

At each Annual Conference, we offer presentations, hold a networking event, and host the informal After-Hours Cafe where our members can share and showcase their work.

The division is run by an Administrator (currently Shelley Fairweather-Vega) and Assistant Administrator (currently Mercedes Guhl), advised by a Leadership Council. If you want to learn more about it or want to participate, feel free to contact us.
