Getting Published

This page will contain basic tips to help you begin the process of finding a publisher for your translations.

If you don’t know where else to go, start with translator Charlie Coombe’s Literary Translation Database Extraordinaire, with listings for grants, publishers, events, residencies, and more. First, read this article about how the database came to be.

ALTA has a collection of guides to getting started in literary translation, though some are outdated, and a publishers database. You can also consult our list of journals that publish translations.

There is an art to getting publishers interested in your work. Our favorite pitching tips are from Anton Hur, in his blog here and in video form here. ALTA has a recorded presentation online here and regularly hosts editor-publisher pitch sessions.

For all types of writing, not just translations, check out Authors Publish and their email newsletter of submission opportunities. This November 2023 list focuses on literary magazines that publish translations.
