Closed-Captioning and SDH: An Introduction with Mara Campbell

This webinar will describe and compare the techniques of closed-captioning (CC) and subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH), both tasks that can offer entry into the audiovisual translation industry.
Presenter Mara Campbell will cover roll-up captions and pop-on captions with and without placement, as well as the pros and cons of available freeware and professional software.

What will you learn?

  • An understanding of what Closed Captioning and SDH are and what producing them entails
  • How similar and different Closed Captions and SDH are and the different audiences they serve
  • An understanding of the different types of Closed Captions and SDH and the industry standards captioners are expected to produce
  • The many freeware and professional software available to perform these tasks
  • To identify if they are qualified, capable and/or willing to learn how to perform these tasks professionally

ATA62: Call for speakers – deadline March 1st

The American Translators Association is accepting presentation proposals for ATA’s 62nd Annual Conference, October 27-30, 2021. The Conference Organizer is looking for relevant, original content that will provide attendees information they can use to build, grow, and manage a translation or interpreting business.

Why submit a proposal?

The ATA Annual Conference attracts 1,500 attendees, bringing together translators, interpreters, educators, project managers, and company owners. Making a presentation to such a diverse audience is an excellent way to build your reputation and résumé, widen your networking circle, and position yourself as an expert in your field! This is a great opportunity to spread your knowledge and gain recognition as an industry leader.

5 Tips for Writing a Proposal

  1. Focus your session on providing relevant, practical education.
  2. Define clear objectives for what attendees will learn.

  4. Create a title that is short and conveys the usefulness of the presentation.
  5. Keep your content targeted to a specific level of experience.

When?

Proposals must be received by March 1, 2021.

By the end of last year, every platform offering remote communication was being used to deliver interpreting services, regardless of its suitability for the job. And interpreters were expected to make it all work, from providing ad hoc technical services and juggling multiple digital devices to educating and working with new clients unfamiliar with the industry’s best practices.

Advance call for ATA62 conference speaker nominations

Greetings, Nordic Division members!

ATA62 will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Oct. 27–30, 2021.

With the upper Midwest a hub of Nordic culture in the United States, the Division hopes to field a strong slate of presentation proposals.

While the formal ATA process for registering proposals has not yet started, we invite all ND members to send suggestions for topics and/or speakers to our individual addresses (below) and to divisionnd@atanet.org. The deadline is sooner than you think, and we want to be able to get a head start on planning!

We are looking for the following:

  • Your own session proposals. You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to share what you know with your colleagues!
  • Suggestions for topics. Even if you cannot present on the topic – maybe someone knows someone who can!
  • Suggestions for individuals/institutions that might be good sources of Distinguished Speaker candidates. If you have any
    connections, let us know, because a personal invitation always works best.

If you want to discuss your idea with us, don’t hesitate to reach out.
