Here is one more post with information about PLD members who shared their knowledge with attendees at the ATA 56th Annual Conference this year. Gio Lester, the president of Association of Translators and Interpreters of Florida, Inc., has shared the slides she used for her session: “An Overview of the Interpreting Profession.”

Abstract:
This session offered an introduction to interpreting and the principles that govern the profession and the market in general. The speaker touched on the history of the profession in Brazil. Attendees found out where interpreting is used, the methods and tools available to interpreters, how technology has affected and will continue to affect the profession, and the rights and responsibilities of interpreters. This session was intended to help individuals who are interested in the profession to better evaluate their skills.

About the Speaker:
Giovanna Lester is the president of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Florida, Inc., which she co-founded in 2009. She has worked in the translation and interpreting industry since 1980. She served on the board of directors of both medical interpreter certification initiatives for the National Coalition on Health Care (later, the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters) and the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters. She is a past administrator of ATA’s Interpreters Division. In addition to ATA, she is a member of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators and the International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters.
