The PEN American Center announced yesterday, March 1st, that the winner of this year’s Translation Prize is Katrina Dodson, who translated Clarice Lispector‘s The Complete Stories, published by New Directions last year.
“Our unanimous selection of The Complete Stories underscores the absolute pleasure of being steeped in Lispector’s deep intellect and her striking, varied portraits of human interaction and intimacy, rendered rich and vivid by Dodson’s steady hand,” the judges said. Other shortlisted works included two Russian, one Bulgarian, and one Italian book in translation published in English in 2015.
Since the PEN Literary Award was created in 1963, only two other Portuguese-to-English translations had been honored: Margaret Jull Costa‘s rendition of The Maias by Eça de Queiroz in 2008 and Harriet De Onís’ translation of Sagarana, a Cycle of Stories, by João Guimarães Rosa in 1967.

RAFA LOMBARDINO is a translator and journalist from Brazil who lives in California. She is the author of “Tools and Technology in Translation ― The Profile of Beginning Language Professionals in the Digital Age,” which is based on her UCSD Extension class. Rafa has been working as a translator since 1997 and, in 2011, started to join forces with self-published authors to translate their work into Portuguese and English. In addition to acting as content curator at eWordNews, a collective blog about translation and literature, she also runs Word Awareness, a small network of professional translators, and coordinates Contemporary Brazilian Short Stories (CBSS), a project to promote Brazilian literature worldwide.
