Our current ATA President, Mr. David Rumsey, spent the past few days visiting the city of São Paulo, in southeast Brazil. He was one of the guest speakers at the Brazilian Association of Translators and Interpreters (ABRATES) Conference, which welcomed 800 attendees last weekend.
Mr. Rumsey talked to a full audience about the U.S. Market for Translators and Interpreters. He also explained the importance of being an ATA member, the certification exam and how the Portuguese Language Division works.
According to him, Brazil holds the second largest population of ATA members outside the U.S., coming right after Canada. Before going back home, he left us a warm message about his experience in São Paulo, which we share here.
The next ABRATES Conference will be held in 2018 in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
ELENICE BARBOSA DE ARAUJO is an independent EN<>PT-Br translator from Brazil who is based in São Paulo. She has a degree in translation and interpretation from Associação Alumni and a bachelor’s degree in Education from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). In her 16 years as a professional translator, editor and proofreader, she has translated fiction and non-fiction books, as well as magazine articles for many publishing houses. Additionally, she produces and reviews editorial, institutional, and digital content for several companies.
