Name: William Dent
Where I live: Washington, DC

What I do:
I am a linguist by nature who enjoys interpretation and translation work. It is my work in the environmental field in Latin America, however, that generates most of my income. I currently run an environmental education program at schools (grades K-8) in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. and head a firm that is the master distributor for two innovative lines of agricultural products that have proven effective in increasing crop yields 10% to 25%.
I’m proud of:
Having helped found SEBRAE, Brazil’s successful executive education program, now with some 5,000 employees, which offers a wide range of business courses throughout Brazil.
My background:
I have a master’s in education and an MBA in finance.
I served in the Peace Corps in Chile, then after graduate school lived in Brazil, where I worked for National Development Bank BNDES and an international bank. My entire career has been in Latin America, with the exception of a stint with a French company. For the past years, I have worked with environmental projects and in assisting firms with business development in Latin America.
Best thing about being an ATA/PLD member
Being listed in the ATA database as interpreter/translator for Portuguese and Spanish. As a member of the PLD, I hope to network with others and share larger projects.
Major challenge(s) in my career:
In terms of interpretation and translation work, the greatest challenge is business development, i.e., generation of more assignments.
What I’m reading (or listening to) now:
- Art Garfunkel – What Is It All but Luminous: Notes from an Underground Man
- Sally Quinn – Finding Magic
- Erik Peterson – The Three Value Conversations
Current project (or last interesting project/job):
- Environmental Education: Monarch Sister Schools Program (Canada, Mexico, and USA)
- Interpretation: court depositions
- New business start-up based in Mexico
