Member Spotlight – Patricia Fonseca

August 23, 2023 By ATA PLD Leave a Comment

Name: Patricia Fonseca

Where you live: Lisbon, Portugal

Email: info@tradscient.com

What you’re doing these days: (translator/interpreter/teacher/professor): After almost 20 years of studying and working abroad, I am about to start my journey as a business owner in my home country, Portugal.

Something you’re proud of: Juggling a full-time career as a project manager/medical writer and my part-time ‘gigs’ as a medical translator.

A bit of your background: I was born in Lisbon, where I completed my undergraduate studies in Applied Chemistry/Biotechnology at NOVA University. I then moved to Texas to join the graduate program in Human Molecular Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. After many years of benchwork, I decided to combine my two passions—science and languages—in a career in medical communications.

How long have you been with ATA? And PLD member? Since 2011.

What did the ATA membership and/or the PLD bring to you? Useful resources when I first started translating technical documents, several clients (who became regular clients!), and many opportunities to network with colleagues.

Current project (or last/future interesting project/activities): I am now part of a super team of volunteers who are podcasting for the Science & Technology Division. It has been a valuable learning experience and lots of fun!

A major challenge(s) in your career: Finding the time to continue learning and reinventing myself while juggling all my professional responsibilities.

Do you have a hobby? I have recently taken up hiking. I enjoy the silence of the woods and mountains and the contact with nature. It is when I come up with my best ideas!

What is your favorite book in Portuguese Language literature? I do not have one favorite, but several! Pretty much anything written by Eça de Queirós. Almost 150 years have passed since he published some of his masterpieces. However, the descriptions of the Portuguese society are still ‘au point’.

Currently on your reading list: I have about 50 books on my list, mostly fiction! I would need a year off to catch up…

Thank you, Patrícia!

We really appreciate the opportunity to learn a little more about you.
