Member Spotlight – Chaewon (Joanne) Kim

May 9, 2024 By ATA PLD 1 Comment

Upper-body shot of Chaewon (Joanne) Kim.

Name: Chaewon (Joanne) Kim

Where you live: Seoul, South Korea

Email: joanne@barkos.io

What you’re doing these days: Translating and writing. Recently promoted as a quality team lead for Scale AI (ask me about this separately to know more).

Something you’re proud of: Networking skills

A bit of your background: I was born in Seoul, Korea, but lived in the US for a decade (Temecula, California and Austin, Texas). My working languages are Spanish, English and Korean. I was working in global sales prior to starting my own practice in 2021. I’ve been a language specialist, however, during my entire career, since most of my work has been global. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Portuguese is limited, but it looks like I kind of have to start getting it to the next level. I joined PLD after being dragged to a bar and dancing salsa with a couple of PLD friends. They really made my first conference experience memorable. I hope I can go again this year!

How long have you been with ATA and PLD? Since around last November (2023).

What did ATA membership and/or the PLD bring to you? For PLD, an amazing, AMAZING group of friends (Mario, Beatriz, Katia, Giovanna, Jeffrey, to name a few — miss you all!). For ATA, A LOT of exposure to new businesses, passion, opportunities, a group of coworkers…. can’t list them all here!! ATA has given me so much value.

Current project (or last/future interesting project/activities): I’ve finally found my niche, and that is — HR! I’ve been translating a lot for coaching and HR recently, and for the Quality Team Lead position I have to manage people a lot. So it requires leadership skills. I love this job because I get to learn about different things and sometimes even apply them directly to my life, either professionally or personally.

A major challenge(s) in your career: Creating a firm structure for my service and how to go about pricing/branding (but I’m working on this right at the moment).

Do you have any hobbies? If so, what are they? I’m a proud F45er.

What books are currently on your reading list? Superpower by Earn Gyu Joo (Korean).

Where is the best place to connect with you? I’m on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/joannebarkos/) all the time, and you can reach me by phone at +82 10-8618-2624.

Thank you.

We really appreciate the opportunity to learn a little more about you.

Joanne, I still remember our meal at WholeFoods… I won’t be going to Portland, but you know how to get hold of me any time. Um grande abraço.
