INTERPRETING TARIFFS: TRUMP’S TRADE POLICIES IN THE GLOBAL ARENA

This dynamic session is designed specifically for English<>Portuguese interpreters working in international trade, legal, and policy contexts. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the historical and current landscape of tariffs, with a special focus on the complexities introduced by recent U.S. policies under Donald Trump. The session will blend substantive content with practical, language-focused exercises to empower interpreters to tackle the nuanced world of trade terminology with confidence.

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Marina Bevilacqua


Marina Bevilacqua de La Touloubre is a Brazilian lawyer, translator, professor of private international law, and consultant in the area of international contracts. She is Director of Institutional Relations at IASP (the São Paulo Lawyers Institute) and the host of “The Global Lawyer” podcast. She has coordinated the “Legal English Online” program at FGV Direito – Rio for a couple of decades, and the modular Legal English and Comparative Law courses at FGV in the areas of contracts, civil procedure, corporate, tax, regulatory, international trade, arbitration, compliance, and legal writing in English. Since then, she has been responsible for academic programs in these areas at the São Paulo Lawyers Institute – IASP, the São Paulo State Public Prosecutor’s Office – MPSP (since 2020), the Higher School of Advocacy of the Brazilian Bar Association, Paraná Section – ESA/OAB-PR (2006 to 2010), and the São Paulo Lawyers Association – AASP (2007 to 2012). She has translated published legal works, such as “Commercial and International Arbitration”, by Prof. Luiz Olavo Baptista (translation commissioned for use in the European Union), “Presumptions in Aid of Construction, and Consideration of Effects and Consequences of Act”, by Henry Campbell Black (author of Black’s Law Dictionary), as well as regulations from various Chambers of Arbitration and Mediation, and the Brazilian Association of Financial and Capital Markets Entities – ANBIMA. She is the author of the “English-Portuguese-English Bilingual Legal Dictionary with Commentaries” (2010), and the audiobook “Legal English for Professionals” (2009), both published by Editora Saraiva.
