Bringing Your I to AI: The Rapidly Changing Technology Landscape in Language Services (Jay Marciano)

Session Description:
Artificial intelligence is playing an ever-increasing role in the language services industry, and everyone from individual translators and interpreters up to the CEOs of the largest translation companies are struggling to adapt to a future that is increasingly driven by AI and by customers’ expectations for radical new solutions. You need to know about the current state of these technologies, how they are currently being used, and what the future holds for you as a language professional.  Attendees will gain an understanding of NMT, large language models, and generative AI in a way that is understandable to non-techies from a leading expert in the field, learn how these technologies are being used in translation & localization, gain insight into the kinds of centrally important roles for language professionals that are in demand as these technologies are applied more broadly.

Presenters’ Bio:

Jay Marciano has spent more than 27 years at the forefront of developing, applying, and explaining machine translation (MT). He has held senior positions at Transparent Language (1998-2001), SDL (2001-2010) and Lionbridge (2010-2020), where he was responsible for the global strategy of using MT to increase translation efficiency, and at Lengoo, where he was deeply involved in the creation of an AI product strategy. Jay is president of the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA) and the International Association for Machine Translation (IAMT) and presents widely on MT, AI, and the future of the translation industry.
