Welcome to the Bay! A SF Local’s Insider Guide for ATA67

October 7, 2026 By CLD Leave a Comment

By Fay Way

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to the City by the Bay: San Francisco, the jewel of the West Coast. It is a world-renowned metropolis that boasts not only breathtaking coastlines and stunning landscapes, but also an incomparably diverse, inclusive, and rich cultural heritage. Grounded in the pioneering spirit of Silicon Valley’s technological innovation, San Francisco stands as a perfect harmony of human culture and natural beauty.

As a long-time San Francisco resident and a fellow member of our ATA community, I am absolutely thrilled to welcome you all to our upcoming Annual Conference this late October. Whether you are flying in from across the globe or travelling over from a neighboring state, you are in for a memorable four days.

Our conference home, the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, is situated right in the heart of the Downtown Embarcadero. With breathtaking views of the Bay Bridge and historic streetcars passing right outside the lobby, you couldn’t ask for a better launchpad to experience the best of SF.

To help you get the most out of your stay, I’ve put together this local guide covering weather, transportation, food, sights, and a few essentials.

1. October Weather: San Francisco’s Warm Time

Good news: October brings San Francisco’s sunniest, warmest weather of the year. Still, layering is advisable. A clear 70°F in the afternoon often drops to a chilly 55°F by evening. Bring a light-to-medium jacket, comfortable walking shoes for the steep hills, and sunglasses.

2. Arrival from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Getting Around

No Cars Required. Skip renting a car and save yourself the stress of driving in San Francisco’s downtown. Rather than struggling to find street parking or overspend on hotel garage rates, use instead the city’s well-connected public transit system and convenient rideshare service.

BART train: Simply hop on! The BART takes you straight from the airport to Embarcadero Station (a smooth 30-minute ride that drops you right at the hotel’s doorstep).

Rideshare: You can call Uber/Lyft to take a 25-minute ride directly from SFO to the hotel’s main entrance.

Driverless Cars (Waymo): For a uniquely futuristic ride, try Waymo – San Francisco’s fully autonomous taxi service. If you plan to take one from SFO, check your app first to see if airport service is available for your account. The pickup location is at the Rental Car Center, which you can easily reach via the gratis AirTrain. To catch a ride around the city, simply request a Waymo through the app.

Muni buses and light rail: In exploring the city’s neighborhoods, the historic F-Market & Wharves streetcar line stops right outside the hotel, running vintage rail cars from around the world along the Embarcadero up to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Cable Car: Take the iconic cable car for a classic, scenic ride. The California Street Cable Car line’s eastern terminus is literally at the doorstep of the Hyatt Regency. Skip the long tourist lines at Powell Street and board here for a scenic, breezy ride straight up and over Nob Hill.

Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus: These characteristic double-decker buses loop through the city’s major hotspots.

3. Food and Dining

San Francisco is a world-renowned culinary capital whose food identity is defined by three main pillars: unmatched fresh local ingredients, a rich heritage of ocean-to-table seafood, and a vibrant fusion of global immigrant cultures.

One of the best things about Hyatt Regency is its location. You don’t need to travel far to find world-class food and atmosphere.

Waterfront Dining: Located directly across from the hotel, the historic Ferry Building Marketplace is a food lover’s paradise—famous for Hog Island oysters, artisanal sourdough, and Blue Bottle Coffee, paired with stunning bay views. Further along the waterfront at Fisherman’s Wharf, grab a classic San Francisco staple: creamy clam chowder served inside a freshly baked Boudin sourdough bread bowl.

North Beach & Chinatown: Walk up Columbus Avenue to experience North Beach, SF’s historic Italian neighborhood. It’s perfect for an evening espresso, authentic pasta, or a late-night drink. Just adjacent is Chinatown—the oldest in North America—offering incredible dim sum and Michelin-starred modern Chinese cuisine.

4. Exploring Around

Here is what’s right in your backyard:

Embarcadero Stroll & Pier 39 Sea Lions: Start your day with a morning walk or jog along the Embarcadero—heading south toward the Bay Bridge or north toward Fisherman’s Wharf for an incredible view of sunrise over the bay. Keep following the promenade north to Pier 39 to visit the famous barking sea lions lounging on the docks; while touristy, it’s a classic, delightfully chaotic San Francisco tradition that never gets old.

Shopping in Downtown & Arts in SoMa: Just a short walk from the hotel via Market Street, you can immerse yourself in the vibrant SoMa district’s cultural hub at the SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) and the nearby Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Continue your stroll into the heart of downtown to Union Square, a bustling city plaza surrounded by luxury high-end flagships, classic department stores, and boutique shops.

City Hall: Known as the “People’s Palace,” is a Beaux-Arts architectural masterpiece in the Civic Center district. It is also one of the most beloved wedding venues in the U.S. As you walk through the majestic Rotunda, you’ll frequently spot glowing marrying couples in tuxedos and white gowns.

Tech Headquarters: For tech enthusiasts, San Francisco sits at the heart of global innovation. The Downtown area directly surrounding our conference hotel is home to the headquarters of tech titans like Salesforce, Uber, Airbnb, and Stripe, as well as the birthplace of the AI pioneers like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Lombard Street & SF’s Famous Steep Hills: Famous as the “crookedest street in the world,” Lombard Street features eight sharp hairpin turns framed by lush hydrangeas and Victorian homes, offering a quintessential San Francisco sight along the city’s legendary steep, roller-coaster-like hills.

Chase Center & Mission Bay: Located just a short ride south of downtown in the bustling Mission Bay neighborhood, Chase Center is the state-of-the-art home arena of the 4-time NBA Champion Golden State Warriors.

5. Outdoor Adventures & Coastal Wonders

San Francisco is a city framed by ocean and greenery. If you have a free morning or a late afternoon break, step outside and soak in our epic natural surroundings.

Bike Across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito: This is arguably the #1 bucket-list experience in the Bay Area. Rent an e-bike near the Ferry Building, ride along Crissy Field, and pedal across the Golden Gate Bridge for spectacular ocean vistas. After coasting down into the charming seaside town of Sausalito for a seafood lunch, catch the passenger ferry straight back to the Ferry Building—right across from your hotel.

Explore Golden Gate Park: Stretching three miles from the heart of the city all the way to the Pacific Ocean. As you wander through its lush, winding paths, you’ll discover world-class attractions like San Francisco Botanical Garden, Japanese Tea Garden and de Young Museum, where you can take an elevator admission free up to the 9th-floor observation tower for breathtaking 360-degree views over the park canopy and city skyline.

Coastal Trails: If you want a bit more of a coastal hike, head to the northwest corner of the city to Lands End trail. Stretching along San Francisco’s western coast, it winds along rugged Pacific cliffs, offering views of hidden coves, shipwrecks at low tide, and the historic Sutro Baths ruins.

6. Beyond the City: Day Trips to Silicon Valley & Napa

If you have an extra day to explore the broader Bay Area, legendary destinations await just outside the city limits. Heading south you can explore the roots of Silicon Valley, just an easy ride with the Caltrain from downtown SF, or a short one-hour drive south to Palo Alto, Mountain View, and San Jose. There, you can tour campuses of tech giants like Google and Apple Park, and soak in the legendary innovation culture.

Another famous landmark is Stanford University—frequently celebrated as America’s most beautiful “single campus” where world-class academic history comes together seamlessly. You can also visit the HP Garage—the official birthplace of Silicon Valley.

Heading north across the Golden Gate Bridge, a scenic hour-long drive brings you straight into Napa Valley, world-renowned for its sun-drenched vineyards, Michelin-starred dining, and picturesque wine tastings.

7. Staying Safe in the City

The Embarcadero around the hotel is active and safe, but stick to well-lit main streets at night and avoid walking through the Tenderloin and Mid-Market (6th–9th Streets) after dark. If driving, never leave anything visible in a parked car to prevent break-ins—not even an empty bag or coat; store all items in your hotel room instead. Finally, buddy up with fellow conference attendees when exploring late at night.

See You at the Hyatt Regency in October!

San Francisco is a city defined by its breathtaking geography, world-class food, pioneering spirit, and incredible diversity. I hope you take the opportunity between our sessions to step outside, smell the ocean air, and discover what makes this place so special.

Safe travels, pack your layers, and I look forward to greeting you all at the Hyatt Regency.
