There’s no denying that sightseeing is a very compelling argument when deciding to attend a conference; otherwise organizers wouldn’t devote so much effort to selecting a perfect, inviting location.
The Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty is second to none. Portland, Oregon’s largest city, is no exception. Even more so when summer shifts to fall — the multicolor foliage and greenery contrasted with the snow-capped Mount Hood in the backdrop is striking. Besides, Downtown Portland is said to have the most gorgeous sunsets.
Eclectic, easy-going and artsy, Portland embraces nature, welcomes diversity and creativity, and offers reasonably affordable activities and attractions for every taste. Packed with parks and trails with breathtaking views, the city is particularly appealing for the outdoorsy, offering an open invitation for light hiking. It is also one of the most eco-friendly and bike-friendly places in the country, with hundreds of miles of biking paths.
Within walking distance of the Convention Center and the conference hotel, there’s the famous Steel Bridge, from which you can access the classic downtown route along the Willamette River and enjoy views of the city’s bridges and the downtown skyline. The Waterfront Park Trail and a floating walkaway are among the main attractions of the route.
Also, across the river, either a 20-minute walk or a 4-minute ride from the Convention Center, there’s the Old Town Chinatown, a must-visit neighborhood. Not far from there you will find the lively Pearl District — an approximately 30-minute walk — filled with art galleries, charming boutiques, cafés and restaurants, and the iconic bookstore Powell’s City of Books.
Deemed one of the craft beer capitals of the US, Portland is famous for its countless microbreweries — a city does not earn the nickname ‘Beervana’ for no reason, right? And wine lovers won’t be disappointed either, as the city offers a large selection of wineries and tasting rooms, in addition to plenty of wine tour options to choose from, for those who plan to stay longer in the region and take time to explore the vineyards of the Willamette Valley.
If these aren’t reason enough to convince you to book your flight right away, I don’t know what else to say besides: “We look forward to seeing you in Portland this coming October at ATA 65!”
