The ATA Annual Conference is almost here, and we are excited to see members of the Portuguese Language Division taking part in this year’s program in San Francisco!
ATA67 brings together translators, interpreters, educators, language company owners, and other language professionals from across the country and around the world. For PLD members attending the conference, it is also a wonderful opportunity to learn from and support colleagues from our own community.
Several PLD members will be presenting this year, with sessions covering negotiation, geopolitics, professional ethics, legal and immigration interpreting, and even the professional considerations behind what interpreters wear on the job.
If you are building your ATA67 agenda, here are some PLD members and sessions to look out for.
Thursday, October 29

Everton Morais
2:40–3:40 p.m.
Seacliff C – Bay Level
Session 021
Negotiation is part of professional life, whether we are discussing rates, project conditions, deadlines, or the value of the services we provide. Conference interpreter and fellow PLD member Everton Morais will lead this session devoted to negotiation strategies for language professionals.
Maps, Mountains, and Microphones: Geopolitics in the Booth
Cris Silva
2:40–3:40 p.m.

Session 022
Thursday afternoon presents PLD members with a difficult choice: Cris Silva will be presenting at the same time as Everton!
Cris’s session brings together geopolitics and interpreting in Maps, Mountains, and Microphones: Geopolitics in the Booth. For colleagues interested in international affairs and the complex environments in which conference interpreters work, this is another session to have on your radar.
The Professional Shield: Good Business Practices and Ethics
Giovanna Lester and Helen Eby
4:15–5:15 p.m.
Seacliff C – Bay Level
Session 042
Later that afternoon, PLD member Giovanna Lester joins Helen Eby for a session on good business practices and professional ethics.
Building a sustainable career in the language professions involves more than linguistic expertise. Sound business practices, professional judgment, and ethical decision-making are all important parts of our work as language professionals.
Friday, October 30
When One Is Not Enough: NAJIT’s Updated Standards for Team Interpreting in Legal Settings
Dr. Nattalia Paterson
1:30–2:30 p.m.
Grand Ballroom – Street Level
Session 044
PLD member Dr. Nattalia Paterson will present a session examining NAJIT’s updated standards for team interpreting in legal settings.

Navigating U.S. Immigration Proceedings: A Guide for Language Professionals
Dr. Nattalia Paterson
4:15–5:15 p.m.
Seacliff D – Bay Level
Session 075
Nattalia returns Friday afternoon with a second session, this time focused on U.S. immigration proceedings.
For translators and interpreters who work with attorneys, immigrants, government agencies, or immigration-related matters, this session offers an opportunity to learn more about the environment in which language professionals provide their services.
Saturday, October 31
Dress Codes Deciphered: Special Considerations for Legal, Medical, and Community Interpreters
Kelsey Trotta
8:30–9:30 a.m.
Seacliff A – Bay Level
Session 088
What we wear can communicate professionalism, respect, and an understanding of the environment in which we work. PLD member Kelsey Trotta will address a practical topic that affects interpreters across legal, medical, and community settings: navigating professional dress considerations in different interpreting environments.
It may be an early Saturday morning session, but it is certainly a topic that touches many interpreters in their day-to-day professional lives.
Come Support Your PLD Colleagues!
One of the best parts of an ATA Annual Conference is learning from colleagues whose names we may already recognize from division activities, webinars, online conversations, and professional networks, and finally having the opportunity to meet them in person.
We are proud to see PLD members contributing their knowledge and experience to this year’s conference program, and we encourage everyone attending ATA67 to stop by their sessions, introduce themselves, and show their support.
And don’t forget to save some time Thursday evening for our own PLD gathering!
