ATA58 Review: Selling Your Translation and Interpreting Services (IC-4)

Last month at the ATA’s 58th Annual Conference in DC, John Di Rico presented the session “Selling Your Translation and Interpreting Services,” a talk focused on the techniques required to successfully acquire and retain direct clients. Di Rico, a French-to-English translator as well as Sales and Marketing Manager for WordFast, advocated a “customer-centric” approach that encouraged sellers to rethink their own views on the buyer-seller relationship.

Di Rico began his talk with a sample email from a prospective buyer and asked audience members to form groups in order to discuss how they might respond. After each group shared their ideas, Di Rico would outline his recommendations, then ask the groups to again brainstorm solutions to another series of questions. During the initial rounds of discussion, Di Rico drew attention to the most important details a seller ought to obtain initially: the name, title and company of the prospective client; how they found out about the seller; the buyer’s present goal; and the challenges they have with their current process. Once these have been identified, the seller can move on to the next step and compose a champion letter for the potential client.

A champion letter is perhaps the most important communication effort in the buyer-seller relationship, as it underscores why the buyer should choose the seller’s services. It also demonstrates a strong degree of professionalism and courtesy. According to Di Rico, it has five parts: a statement of goals (or shared goals), a summary of the current situation and the capabilities required to address it, at least one potential benefit from the seller’s services, and the next steps should the buyer maintain their interest.

Other advice of note included Di Rico’s statement that sales is a conversation, one that requires patience and a strong willingness to find solutions for the buyer. Also, to build a strong, personable relationship with a buyer early on, Di Rico advised that the seller try to schedule a phone call in their first email response. Lastly, the seller should not invest too much time in obtaining a client that is uncooperative in providing the info needed to conduct their business.

For this writer, Di Rico’s approach seemed reasonable and well worth considering. Although not all his recommendations may have been new to session attendees, it was beneficial to closely examine the techniques sellers utilize when they interact with prospective buyers. Perhaps the most salient takeaway was Di Rico’s emphasis on making sure that the seller understands the buyer’s needs and that they work with them to reach a solution. Even with the focus on direct clients, translators and interpreters can nonetheless incorporate Di Rico’s recommendations into their relationship with agencies, as they could also benefit from a heightened sensitivity to a project manager’s needs. Furthermore, customer-centric selling enables the seller to rethink the value of their services and may provide for a renewed sense of purpose in their professional goals. In other words, what does it mean to translate or interpret, for the sellers themselves, the buyers, and perhaps also the greater social good.

Situational Subject-Matter Awareness in the Process of Translation and Interpretation

Introduction

In the process of reading a translated text in this or that specific area of studies, one normally does not focus on the fact that the text being read is a translation. The reader’s attention is in fact drawn to the subject-matter of the text. What might possibly make us aware that we are dealing with a translation is a multitude of translation faux pas. The best way to avoid them is to adequately understand the situational subject-matter and the context, which in fact is an essential part of a translator’s competency and professionalism.

Situational subject-matter includes the persons, objects and phenomena found in the text, as well as the relationships between them. According to translation and interpretation scholar E. Breus, the same extralinguistic situation can be perceived and described differently in different languages. [1] Clearly, without situational subject-matter awareness, a translator is not able to produce an adequate translation and fully convey the message meant by the author in the source language.

Research findings

The situational subject-matter awareness is vital for understanding what the original text is about. To illustrate this statement, the following examples are quite appropriate:

ENGLISH – RUSSIAN: Why is it that smokers always head out coatless, no matter what the weather? (Head out – выходят из здания на улицу = are leaving the building rather than стремятся выйти or направляются = are trying to leave or are headed for.) [2]

RUSSIAN – ENGLISH: Библиотечный фонд университета составляет полтора миллиона экземпляров книг. (Библиотечный фонд is not the library fund, which would be a word-for-word translation, but the number of books held.) [3]

Without situational subject-matter awareness, the wrong translation is unavoidable. In a TV program about rock musicians of the 1980s who arranged concerts for charity, it was said that the musicians called themselves representatives of the Band Aid generation. According to Wikipedia, the term originated from a charity super-group featuring mainly British and Irish musicians founded in 1984 to raise money for anti-famine efforts in Ethiopia by releasing the song “Do they know it’s Christmas?”.

The translation of this phrase into Russian came out as поколение групповой помощи (literally “the generation of group assistance”), which was not correct. The word Band-Aid (originally meaning a brand of an adhesive bandage) was split into two words by the translator: band (a musical group, as in jazz band) and aid (assistance).

The context, however, made it clear that the rock musicians considered it their mission to provide emergency aid for the needy—just like a Band-Aid is used for emergency purposes, e.g., when a person accidentally cuts his/her finger. The translator should have used a metaphorical expression, but the major challenge was to understand the situational subject-matter for the purpose of conveying the meaning in Russian.

The context is what makes it easier to understand the situational subject-matter and produce the correct translation, taking into account what and how they say/write in this or that situation in the target (Russian) language.

  • When watching American movies, Russian-speaking viewers fluent in English are quite often able to notice incorrect translations of English phrases. For instance, in a telephone conversation, the question Are you there? should be rendered in Russian as Ты меня слышишь? (literally, Can you hear me?) instead of Ты там?
  • As a rule, the meaning of the word becomes clear as soon as it is placed in a sentence, which serves as a narrow context:
  • ENGLISH – RUSSIAN: The settlements between companies were made without delay. – Расчеты (not урегулирование, поселения, etc.) между компаниями были произведены без задержки.
  • RUSSIAN – ENGLISH: Нам было предложено оценить его работу. – They suggested that we evaluate (not appreciate, estimate, etc.) his work.
  • But in other cases, to understand the situational subject-matter and the meaning of the word or a phrase, a broad context is needed. It may include several sentences, a paragraph, or even the text of the whole article or video, as was the case with the Band Aid generation.

That said, a translator should not overdo it by trying to produce a special effect in the process of translation. The following example seems to be a good illustration of this statement.

In May 1995, an American was interpreting during the meeting between Clinton and Yeltsin in the USA. Russia’s President sarcastically said, “Вот вы, журналисты, предрекали провал. На самом деле это вы провалились”. This is what the interpreter said: “You, journalists, said it would be a disaster. In fact, you are a disaster.” (Clinton is laughing.)

Perhaps in that situation it would have been more appropriate to use the verb to fail: “You journalists predicted failure. In fact, it’s you who have failed.” The word disaster was too strong, and was surely a case of the interpreter “overdoing” the interpretation. [4]

Summarizing the reasons for failing to understand the situational subject-matter of an utterance, it is possible to identify the following ones:

  1. Copying a grammar/lexical structure of a sentence without taking the trouble to analyze its implication (e.g.: Don’t cross the bridge until you come to it – is NOT Не говори гоп, пока не перескочишь, but Будем решать проблемы по мере их поступления).
  2. Misunderstanding the flow of an utterance which results in unacceptable splitting of set expressions, and consequently – in the wrong translation, as in the above example of Band-Aid generation.
  3. Lack of knowledge of professional jargons and idioms, which makes it hard to convey the meaning – in the field of business, in particular. The following examples are vivid enough illustrate this statement:
  • The proposal went over big with big business (to go over big – to succeed, to be approved of)
  • Let’s deal him in and give him a piece of the cake (to deal smb in – to include smb in an activity or business; to give smb a piece of cake – to share or divide profits with another person.
  • The business is slack, and our sales level hardly reaches the break-even point (a point at which sales cover costs but do not show profits) [5].

Conclusion

All the above means that situational subject-matter awareness — as an important translation issue — should be considered as an indispensable skill in translation and interpretation, alongside with such skills as:

  • discerning narrow and broad contexts;
  • understanding realia and realities, as well as culture-bound objects;
  • being competent in the terminology of the text’s content or field of studies and research;
  • recognizing the dangers of carbon-paper (word-for-word) translation;
  • observing the norms of the target language.

Lifetime Recognition Award to be presented to Prof. Emeritus James E. Augerot

Teachers hold a special place in our hearts as we go through life. Language teachers play a particularly crucial role in our education as linguists. Unfortunately most of us rarely express our appreciation for the gift of knowledge bestowed on us by teachers. I am therefore happy to spread the word that one of my former professors, James Augerot, Professor Emeritus of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington (Seattle), will be publicly honored for a lifetime of service to his profession, and more specifically to U.S. – Romanian relations.

Dr. Augerot (aka “Big Jim”) will be presented a lifetime recognition award by the Romanian Ambassador to the US. Why Romanian, you may ask? During the Cold War, Central and Eastern European languages were often lumped together, regardless of language group, based on geopolitical boundaries. Hence a scholar of Romanian found his academic home in the Slavic department. Fortunately for those of us who did not study Romanian, Jim was also an excellent professor of Russian, Bulgarian, Old Russian, Old Slavic and more. I especially appreciate having studied morphology (The Structure of Russian) with Big Jim.

Audiovisual Translation: Joys and Challenges

My first introduction to audiovisual translation (AVT) happened while I was growing up in the Soviet Union. I don’t remember the first foreign movie that I watched, but they were many and came from an array of countries. Premier movies and shows that were dubbed in Moscow were a work of art: I laughed at Pierre Richard and Gerard Depardieux, was enthralled with colorful scenes of India, sympathized with Michele Placido, felt at home with the Mexican and Brazilian soap operas, and was mesmerized by the enigmatic American way of life. Then came the 90s: the Iron Curtain fell, and my country was flooded with overseas movies available on video tapes. The voiceover for those movies was done by individuals whose “stage voice” was purposefully nasal and monotonous. Fast forward to today, and one of the fields I work in is subtitle translation.

Audiovisual content has been experiencing exponential growth fueled by the Internet boom: not only can we stream movies, shows, documentaries, concerts and sport events, but now there is online education and gaming. The recent development in the AVT world has been with Netflix and Amazon, as they started offering their products in many countries. Because of the volume of audiovisual content, subtitle translation has become the mode of choice, since it is the least expensive and the fastest way to localize an audiovisual event. Voiceover is more audience-friendly, but costs more, since it involves a voice talent and studio; dubbing is the most enjoyable for the audience, but it is the most expensive.

A good audiovisual translator is a person who is familiar with the culture, comfortable with slang (there is a lot of that!), and quick to adapt to the peculiarities of AVT. Here is what makes subtitle translation different from other types of translations:

  1. The translator is always looking for ways to make the translation shorter. There is the ever-present factor of reading speed that the translator needs to consider. Currently, the speed of 17 characters per second (CPS) is widely accepted for grown-up audience. This speed allows the viewer to read the subtitle and to have time to see what is happening on the screen. When actors talk fast or when translation into a target language is longer, it calls for re-creation: words and phrases that are not critical to the plot will be dropped, expressions reworded and repetitions omitted. The translator aims at translating maximum meaning within the tight boundaries of reading speed.
  2. Translation is geared toward translating emotion versus text. It is of primary importance to make the translation sound as natural in the target language as possible. Instead of staying close to the original text, substituting common expressions in the target language is normal. In a lot of cases, the shortest option will win (see point 1).
  3. Translating a lot of conversational speech: one might need to brush up on slang (Urban Dictionary comes in handy) and the current corresponding phrases in the target language. Punctuation in conversational speech also can be tricky.
  4. Working with style guides that differ slightly, and keeping in mind those differences. For instance, one client might want a space after a hyphen at the beginning of each speaker’s line in dialogs, another might not.
  5. The translator is usually paid per minute of runtime, not per word. This is unfortunate, as content varies in difficulty and word count: a 45-minute show can have as many as 850 subtitles and as few as 550. Netflix has a multi-language chart of per-minute prices that it pays agencies for a finished product.

Commonalities:

  1. The translation needs to be as accurate as possible (tense, register, punctuation).
  2. The translator researches terminology (for historic films or ones dealing with a particular field, e.g. medicine or law, and especially documentaries).
  3. Sometimes translators work alone, other times they works in a team of other translators (when there are several seasons of the same show, for example). Some agencies provide platforms for translators to collaborate in order to unify their efforts, others do not.

While I do other types of translation and hope to keep it that way, so my skills are more balanced, I enjoy audiovisual translation, and here is why:

  • a good translation can bridge a cultural gap for the audience;
  • watching a show or a movie and translating it helps with the boredom that naturally comes when translating documents;
  • it’s a thrill to find a good equivalent in the target language that fits into the reading speed!
  • when working for an agency, the software is provided on the agency’s site: no need to buy yet another CAT tool.

Challenges of audiovisual translation:

  • relatively low pay, if counted per word;
  • getting stuck with translation because all the words are plot-pertinent, yet they don’t fit the reading speed;
  • tight deadlines: a 45-minute show is usually translated in 2 days or less.

Now is a good time to get into the field for anyone who wants to give it a try. While it is possible to work for direct clients who regularly produce audiovisual content (government organizations, religious groups, educational websites), most audiovisual translators work for agencies who are subcontractors of major content providers. A narrowed-down search in the ATA directory will yield names of companies that work with subtitles. Most of these companies require a prospective translator to take an unpaid test. If you want to build your subtitle translation skills, you can learn them as you volunteer (for instance, on the TED Project). Acquiring this new skill will help you see translated movies in a new light and gain appreciation for the work audiovisual translators do. You might like it so much you will want to continue!

Coming Out of the Shadow: Review of Madeline G. Levine’s Susana Greiss Lecture [from SlavFile]

Each year at the American Translators Association Annual Conference, the Susana Greiss lecture brings an eminent guest lecturer to speak upon some aspect of translation/interpretation related to the Slavic languages. ATA’s Polonists owe a debt of gratitude to Nora Favorov, who initially reached out to Madeline Levine, the 2016 speaker. Dr. Levine’s address, “In the Shadow of Russian: Forty Years of Translating Polish Literature,” proved a seminal event: Dr. Levine became the first speaker in the nineteen-year history of the Greiss lecture to address a Polish subject.

Graduates of Slavic Studies programs in the United States have often encountered the tendency to categorize the various Slavic literatures as “major” or “minor,” with Russian at the top. In 1963, Dr. Levine, a Russian specialist at Harvard, chose to study Polish as her secondary literature requirement. It turned out to be a serendipitous decision; the need for scholarly attention to and good literary translation of Polish was extreme. In fact, an American colleague of Dr. Levine’s once greeted her with the question, “Is there really such a thing as Polish literature?” Learning “at breakneck speed” to read Polish, Dr. Levine began a lifelong career translating this “minor” literature.

Dr. Levine’s early work was made more difficult by the lack of critical resources available. (She singled out Kridl’s “stupefyingly dull,” blue-covered, pictureless survey.) This situation was radically transformed by the publication of Miłosz’s 1969 work, The History of Polish Literature, which helped to provide a cultural and historical context for Polish literature in a “readable, even exciting” way. As I pulled out my 40-year-old copy of this book, heavily annotated in the early ‘70s, I found myself in wholehearted agreement. Miłosz’s work, with its determination to “avoid… scholarly dryness” and “preserve… a trace of a smile” must have created something of a Lazarus experience when it first appeared—Polish literature was alive after all.

Among other groundbreaking efforts for Polish literature in English, Dr. Levine explored the “labors of love” undertaken by Celina Wieniewska and Barbara Vedder. These pioneering women translated the works of Bruno Schulz and Tadeusz Borowski, two unknown writers whose influence now reaches worldwide. Dr. Levine has produced new translations of these works, and her translation of Bruno Schulz’s prose fiction is soon to be published by Northwestern University Press.

A primary focus of Dr. Levine’s work has been Jewish-themed literature in the Polish language. In translating works about the Holocaust and in her work as a university professor, she has delved into the question: “How is it possible that such horror can be captured and transformed into works of artistic beauty?” She has also taken on another wartime subject: her re-translation of Białoszewski’s Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising was released by the New York Review of Books in their Classics series.

Dr. Levine has had her share of good fortune: at a very young age, she obtained her first position as Assistant Professor at the City University of New York “sight unseen” after a phone interview. She enjoyed the stability of her position in the University of North Carolina’s Slavic Languages and Literatures Department (now Germanic & Slavic Languages and Literatures). However, she has also experienced the vicissitudes of the publishing industry and, as a result, seems to have developed the patience of a saint! After 40 years of sharing an unknown literary culture with readers and students, Dr. Levine leaves her audience with the firm conviction that she has only just begun. When I asked her at our communal lunch: “So what still needs to be translated?” She responded: “Everything!”

A [Better] CAT Breed for the Slavic Soul

Aha! I said to myself upon spying this presentation among the 2013 ATA Conference’s offerings. At last, I will find out which elusive CAT tool actually does a good job with Slavic languages! I had tried several tools, but hadn’t yet run across one that was able to accommodate the peculiarities of my language, Russian, particularly when it came to all of the inflected forms.

Alas, it took no more than two slides for me to be sorely disappointed – not in Konstantin Lakshin’s presentation, but in the sad news that there is, in fact, no such thing as a good CAT tool for Slavic languages. Or, at least, there isn’t yet.

Despite my initial dismay at the news, I fortunately stayed to hear the entire presentation. It can be briefly summarized as follows: A combination of technical, linguistic, and particularly market forces have conspired to make CAT tools what they are today: decidedly Slavic-unfriendly. The good news is that many of the pieces needed to improve them already exist, and it’s up to us to put pressure on developers and companies to make use of those pieces.

The reason it took the better part of an hour to provide this information is that the presentation included a lot of very interesting history, examples, and details. It really was quite educational, at least for me.

Kostya started by outlining the history of computer use in translation, and the development of CATs in particular. He began with a discussion of a 1966 government-funded report by the Automatic Language Processing Advisory Committee on the use of computer technology in translation. The gist of this report as it applies to our CAT tool discussion is that machine translation doesn’t work well, but that something vaguely resembling what we now consider a CAT tool, with a similar workflow, might be useful. This pseudo-CAT workflow used the punch card operator – i.e., a human being – as a morphology analyzer. This is interesting, because one of our principal complaints about today’s CAT tools is that they do not have morphology analysis capability. The report also compared use of this early form of CAT with a standard translation process, and found that while it might save some time, its primary advantage was that it “relieve[d] the translator of the unproductive and tiresome search for the correct technical terms.” The report emphasized that compiling the proper termbase was really the key to an effective translation tool.

In the decade or so following the report, the emphasis in computer-assisted translation was thus on building termbanks. In other words, the focus was on words and phrases – small subsegments, if you will – and these termbanks were generally compiled for specific large organizations operating in specific contexts and were not readily transferrable to other entities.

The philosophy that drives current CAT tools – the “recycling” of previously translated texts – emerged fully only in 1979, though large corporations had begun exploring this starting in the late 1960s. This philosophy was in great part a result of the requirements and technologies in place at the time. In the 1960s, for instance, the world was a less integrated place, and there was limited control over the input side – the source text content, editing, and so on. The example Kostya provided was scientific texts coming out of the USSR that were being translated. Fast-forward to the 1980s and 1990s: large corporations have end-to-end control of processes and utilize translation (and translation technology) for their own documents. In this latter context, being able to retrieve and reuse entire sentences made a lot of sense. Note also that in the prevailing markets in which the early CAT tools developed, the primary languages were not highly inflected.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the first commercially available CAT tools appeared: IBM Translation Manager II, XL8, Eurolang, and two still-familiar tools, Trados and Star Transit. Trados, in particular, started life as a language services provider trying to get an IBM contract.

The mid- to late 1990s saw the emergence of tools being created ostensibly for translators: Déjà Vu, Memo Q, and WordFast. However, rather than being fundamentally different from their larger predecessors, these often turned out to be essentially smaller, less functional versions of Trados. This era also witnessed the development of smaller commercial players, such as WordFisher (a set of Word macros) and in-house tools such as LionBridge, Foreign Desk, and Rainbow (specifically for software localization), as well as Omega T, the first open-source CAT tool.

That brings us to the present day, the 2000s, when there are too many CAT tools to list, and there have been many mergers and acquisitions among them. However, NONE of the existing tools can be considered very useful for Slavic or other highly inflected languages. In addition to the reasons noted above, there were other issues that contributed to this situation as the software was being developed. First, there were no obvious ways to incorporate Cyrillic into early software. Second, there were additional market forces, such as software piracy, the cross-border digital divide, and the lack of major clients, that provided little incentive to software developers to make CAT tools that would be particularly useful in Slavic-language markets.

Today, we have a much wider playing field in terms of the market for translation. Translation work is “messier” now, and involves things like corporate rebranding and renaming, a variety of dialects and non-native speech, outsourcing, rewrites for search engine optimization, and bidirectional editing in which both source and target documents are being modified. In this environment, the old “termbase plus recycled text” CAT model is not sufficient.

From this historical background, Kostya next proceeded to illustrate just what the difficulties are that Slavic languages present for today’s CAT tools. These can be boiled down to their relatively free word order, their rich morphology, and their highly inflected nature. The CAT tool’s “fuzzy match” capabilities are insufficient for Slavic languages.

Kostya then provided a number of illustrative examples. Consider the following pairs of segments:

He ran these and other examples through about a half-dozen CAT tools using a 50% match cutoff, and found that the first example was considered only a 60-80% match, and the second was 0% (in other words, below the 50% threshold). The CAT tools on the market generally do not recognize partial segments in a different order, nor can they tell that “analyzing” and “analysing” are essentially the same word. In other words, they lack language-specific subsegment handling, and morphology-aware matching, searching, and term management. They are also missing form agreement awareness (e.g., noun/adjective case agreement). This diminishes their utility for those translating out of Slavic languages, to be sure, but it also complicates matters for those translating into Slavic languages, as word endings in retrieved fuzzy matches must constantly be checked and corrected.

The obvious question that Kostya next asked is, can this situation be fixed? In theory, yes. Kostya believes that many software tools already in use by search engines, machine translation, and the like could be integrated into CAT tools. These include Levenshtein distance analyzers that can handle differences within words; computational linguistics tools such as taggers, parsers, chunkers, tokenizers, stemmers, and lemmatizers, which analyze such things as syntax and word construction; morphology modules; and even Hunspell, the engine already in use by numerous CAT tools for spellchecking but not for analyzing matches.

Developers continue to cite obstacles to integrating these tools: it’s complicated, they are too language-specific, we don’t know how to set up the interface, there are licensing issues, we have limited resources. While all of these are legitimate factors, Kostya believes that they do not present insurmountable obstacles. He is hopeful that developers will start seeing these tools as data abstraction tools that enable the software to break down the data into something that is no longer language-specific.

So what can we do about this lack of suitable CAT tools? Kostya’s recommendation is principally that we talk to software developers and vendors and explain what we want. We need to create our own market pressure to move things along. In addition, we need to educate developers and vendors about the existing tools that are available; for instance, we might point them to non-English search engines that utilize morphology analyzers.

Alas, there is neither a good CAT tool for the Slavic soul nor a quick fix to this situation. But after listening to Kostya’s presentation, I have a much better understanding of how this situation developed and how we might take action to prompt vendors and developers to move in a new direction.

Russian Language Style Guide Resources

At the ATA 55th Annual Conference in Chicago a question was raised whether there is a Russian Guide similar to The Chicago Manual of Style for English language. I tried then to answer this question orally while below are some formal links to the sources I cited. One must keep in mind that Russian rules are much stricter than English. Though they do leave some freedom to the users, in most cases the absence (or presence) of a comma or of any other punctuation sign is an obvious mistake.

Please also note that numbers 2 & 3 of my list exist in various versions (titles, authors and dates of publication vary) but they are generally referred as Розенталь and Мильчин accordingly.
